HKUST Moves Up to 33rd in QS World University Rankings 2027

HKUST has risen 11 places to 33rd in the QS World University Rankings 2027, marking a meaningful milestone as the University celebrates its 35th anniversary.

The result reflects steady progress built over time, underpinned by the collective efforts of its community. HKUST President Prof. Nancy IP described the advancement as “heartening,” noting that it speaks to the shared commitment of students, faculty, staff and alumni.

“It stands as clear evidence of our collective synergy, and reaffirms our strength in teaching, research and nurturing future talent,” she said, adding that continued support from the Hong Kong SAR Government has also been an important factor in the University’s development.

HKUST’s performance this year is supported by its consistent strength across key indicators, including academic reputation, research output and international outlook. As Hong Kong’s first research-intensive university, it has built a strong presence in interdisciplinary areas spanning engineering, life sciences, business, and the humanities, while continuing to expand into new frontiers, including medicine and health innovation, all within a deeply international campus environment.

The University also continues to attract a highly diverse student body. It has the highest proportion of international undergraduate students among UGC-funded institutions, with nearly half of its non-local intake coming from over 80 countries and regions. This global mix contributes to a dynamic learning environment and prepares students to operate across cultures and industries.

Alongside its academic strengths, HKUST places a strong emphasis on preparing students for the evolving world of work. Its forward-looking curriculum—featuring interdisciplinary programs and AI literacy—equips students with both technical expertise and adaptable skills.

This focus is reflected in outcomes. HKUST graduates are widely recognized for their employability and global outlook, and remain highly competitive in the international job market. Their strong industry recognition not only reflects the quality of the University’s education, but also the initiative and capability of its students and alumni.

Beyond rankings, the University continues to emphasize real-world impact. Guided by a broad and forward-looking perspective, its faculty and students work to identify pressing societal needs and translate research into practical solutions that benefit communities.

While the latest ranking is encouraging, Prof. Ip underscored that it is not an end in itself.

“Rankings serve as a useful benchmark, but more importantly they motivate us to keep improving,” she said. “HKUST will continue to harness our ‘can-do’ spirit to turn breakthroughs in research and teaching into tangible contributions for society, while nurturing globally minded leaders and supporting Hong Kong’s development.”

As Hong Kong and the nation look ahead to new phases of development, including the 15th Five-Year Plan, HKUST remains focused on contributing through talent development, innovation and knowledge transfer—particularly in addressing the opportunities and challenges shaped by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

The latest rise in the rankings signals both progress and potential. With a strong foundation and a clear sense of purpose, HKUST is well positioned to continue advancing—alongside the students and graduates who extend its impact far beyond campus.
