Faculty members of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) community represented the university at the Dubai Future Forum, hosted by the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) on November 19-20. Known as the world’s largest gathering of futurists, the event brought together scientists and experts from over 100 countries to forecast critical trends and address global challenges.
Prof. Janet HSIAO from HKUST’s Division of Social Science took the stage on the panel “Towards Symbiosis: How is Our Relationship with Algorithmic Life-Forms Evolving?” where she shares insights on AI's impact on human cognition, the comparability of human and AI intelligence over time, and the importance of governance.
Prof. YEUNG Sai-Kit from the Division of Integrative Systems and Design (ISD) presented the “Coral Reef Segmentation”, an advanced model for automatic coral reef segmentation, at Dubai Future Solutions – Prototypes for Humanity. This is an international program enabling academic innovations that produce real-world impact for humanity. Selected from over 2,700 global submissions, this project has showcased HKUST's commitment to tackling environmental challenges through cutting-edge research.
Dr. David LEUNG, Head of Smart Systems and Project Development at HKUST's Office of Knowledge Transfer, also represented HKUST, connecting the university’s DeepTech startups with Dubai Future Labs.
These meaningful engagements demonstrate HKUST's dedication to driving global change through technological innovation, aligning with the strategic vision outlined during the President's UAE visit earlier this year. HKUST will continue pioneering solutions to benefit humanity worldwide.
