Voluntary works in remote villages of china-Wu Zhi Qiao(WZQ) bridge building trip

"We can do no great things, only small things with great love"-Mother Teresa

This is my second bridge building trip with Wu Zhi Qiao(WZQ) which aims at building a bridge as a life saver that improves Villagers’ living . Compared to last time, this is again another unforgettable experience.

11 days of hard work in Mixia village was definitely physically demanding. Every day starts with a 30-minute walk along a muddy road for the crew, and then we arrive at the bridge building site. Without a moment to spare, we start fixing our wired boxes and filling it with stones. Although I have to admit carrying heavy stones and steel bars can be quite tiring, I feel it is worth it as our hard work can provide a safe bridge crossing for the villages.

Also, this construction project was different from any previous that i had joined because I had the great opportunity to work with engineers of ARUP and mentors from the university of Kunming.I learnt a lot from my partners through inspiring topic discussions and was able to use critical thinking skills in solving unexpected problems. Time management and team cooperation was essential for effectively completing the task at hand. “Before it rains, bind around with silk”, I cannot agree more, that’s why we anticipated for possible errors and figured out a back up plan just to be on the safe side.

I really enjoyed my time with the villagers in Mixia. On New Year’s eve, our team from HK gathered together with them in a square. Together we watched the splendors of fireworks and sang songs, celebrating the coming of 2012! Another day, I was playing “yan zi” (shuttlecock) with a village friend, I realized they had never played this game before, that’s why they found it very amusing! Before our departure, the villager held a party for us and gave us presents. I was touched by their hospitality and friendliness. I felt that through helping others, in a way I am giving but at the same time receiving priceless friendship and memories.

As we enter in to another year, I have a wish. I hope with time as I accumulate professional knowledge in civil engineering, my passion in helping those in need will only grow. I believe satisfaction is built on using my skills to shape a better environment for others.
