The Vice-President for Institutional Advancement of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Prof. WANG Yang, led a delegation to Paris in early September to attend UNESCO’s annual digital learning event and expand the University’s partnership network in France.
At the UNESCO Digital Learning Week 2024, Prof. Wang and Prof. Kani CHEN, Program Director of the MSc in Financial Mathematics and Co-Director of the Risk Management and Business Intelligence Program, participated in a breakout session titled “Leveraging Digital Transformation for Green Skills, Green Jobs, and Youth Climate Action” on September 5. They shared insights on how blockchain, AI and green transformation of the education industry could shape our sustainable future. The HKUST representatives also engaged in fruitful exchanges with representatives from UNESCO’s Education and Culture Sectors, covering topics related to the global development of AI and blockchain education and the use of advanced technologies for cultural heritage protection.
During the Paris trip, the HKUST delegation also engaged in discussions with senior leaders from Université Paris Dauphine - PSL, including Prof. El Mouhoub Mouhoud, President of Dauphine and Interim President of PSL; Prof. Sophie Méritet, Vice-President of International Affairs; Prof. Costantino Creton, Vice President of Research; and researchers at PSL, to explore potential collaborations on joint research and sustainability initiatives. The universities formalized their partnership by signing an agreement to signify strengthened collaboration and enhanced academic exchange opportunities.
On September 6, HKUST co-hosted a morning session with HKTDC on “AI & Web3: Opportunities and Challenges in Asia and Beyond” at the Paris office. Prof. Wang shared how AI is transforming Web3 across various industries and highlighted Hong Kong’s strategic role in developing the digital economy. The event created a vibrant platform for knowledge exchange between academia and industry.
Additionally, Prof. Wang met with Minister Counselor ZHOU Jiagui at the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of France. Prof. Wang spoke about the role of higher education in fostering entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area, while Minister Counselor Zhou shared valuable insights on educational opportunities in France.
To connect with extensive alumni networks globally, Prof. Wang hosted a reunion with Paris-based alumni to reinforce HKUST's community.
The trip greatly enhanced HKUST’s ties with both institutional and corporate partners in France.
