HKUST Community to Organize Winter Garage Sale for Fun and Sustainability

2012-12-06

A garage sale with nearly 200 stalls of new and pre-loved goods will be held in the covered car park at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) this Saturday morning (8 December).

Started in October 1996, the biannual Garage Sale events have displayed an extensive variety of exciting new and preloved goods including toys, games, books, household items, jewellery, clothes, accessories etc and have drawn overwhelming response over the years. Mrs Jean Hudson, the garage sale coordinator, said that after years of development, the Garage Sale has an impressive increase in vending tables from 56 at the start to this year’s 195 and with a record of 50 potential vendors on the waiting list.

In line with the commitment of HKUST to environmental sustainability, the biannual Garage Sale endorses the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (3Rs) campaign.

In addition to HKUST staff and their families, students and alumni and members of the general public the event also features a wide variety of charitable and non-profit making organizations. As in previous years, the proceeds from the table hire of the sale in winter will be donated to Operation Santa Claus, a charity event jointly organized by Radio Television Hong Kong and South China Morning Post. The funds raised will go to 18 charitable organizations under six areas namely for children, young people and the elderly, the physically and mentally disabled and towards payment of needed medical treatment, as well as community and environmental.

In addition to selling goods, a specifically designated area is available for people to donate items in good condition that they no longer require and these in turn are given to charities in Hong Kong, Mainland China and South East Asia supported by HKUST student charities. Among the voluntary support from many people connected with HKUST & the local commuity who help to make this event a success, members of The HKUST Student Social Services Society are helping with the sorting and boxing of all the donated goods.

Parking, food and drinks are available. Admission to the garage sale is free.
