A Dazzling Night of Philanthropy: Dr. Jensen HUANG’s Autographed Leather Jackets Found its Way to An Educational Cause
The inaugural Gala Dinner of the HKUST Foundation recently took place amid an outpouring of kindness and generosity—hosting over 200 distinguished guests of academia, business, and philanthropy. The gala dinner marked the official launch of the HKUST Foundation, which aims to foster a greater sense of belonging among the University community while broadening its fundraising network for strategic development.
Amidst the glitz and glamor, what truly stole the limelight was the auction of two exclusive leather jackets autographed by NVIDIA’s Founder and CEO, Dr. Jensen HUANG. These two jackets raised a staggering total of over HK$20 million to support strategic development at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
Emblazoned with “HKUST,” these jackets carry an esteemed origin as rich as its craftsmanship. Dr. Huang wore them during a fireside chat with HKUST Council Chairman Prof. Harry Shum last November, following his conferral of an honorary Doctor of Engineering at HKUST’s 2024 Congregation. In a generous gesture, Dr. Huang gifted both jackets to the University, personally inscribing a message on one—instantly elevating them to treasure icons within the HKUST community.
The Winning Bid: “I Love HKUST Very Much”
The gala’s crescendo arrived when Mr. Terry TSANG, CEO of Madhead, won the jacket bearing Dr. Huang’s autograph and personal message with a remarkable pledge of HK$10 million. The message inscribed on the back of his newly acquired jacket reads: “From a proud alum to the future of AI and HKUST.”
A high-flying alumnus and proud Council Member of HKUST, Terry—who co-chaired the Gala Dinner Organizing Committee—took the stage to declare: “I am an HKUST alumnus, and I love HKUST very much.” His heartfelt words ignited cheers and rapturous applause from the crowd, epitomizing the community’s unity.
A Legacy of Giving
Tsang’s dedication to HKUST spans years, including establishing a student emergency fund. Reflecting on his journey from student to industry innovator, Terry shared, “Twenty-four years ago, in 2001, I began my journey of learning and growth at HKUST, where I earned three degrees,” he reminisced. “Over the years, HKUST has become my home—where I met extraordinary mentors, classmates, alumni, and friends. I feel truly honored that we have been able to serve and contribute to our alma mater, HKUST, together.”
Terry has decided to display the leather jacket at the Engineering Commons on campus. “The jacket is a vivid reminder of Dr. Huang’s innovative spirit that has sparked transformative changes in the realm of AI. I trust it will inspire students to change the world,” he went on with conviction.
Doubling the Impact
In a remarkable twist, Dr. Huang matched Terry’s bid through the Jen-Hsun & Lori Huang Foundation, doubling the contribution. “Little did we know when Dr. Huang gifted us his jackets that we would find a worthy cause for them. Eager to give back to my alma mater, the idea of a matching donation soon took root in my mind,” Terry recalled. Their combined contribution of HK$20 million will establish the HKUST Top Engineering Scholars Award, which is designed to recognize outstanding undergraduate students and PhD students.

A New Milestone Embodying the Power of Unity
Other auction items included another leather jacket worn by Prof. Shum during his chat with Dr. Huang; four exquisite bottles of red wines donated by Dr. the Hon. Henry TANG, Chairman of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority Board; and an exquisite ink wash painting by celebrated artist Ms. Yvonne CHOW Hau-Yee.
The evening was also a delight to the senses with captivating music performances, featuring world-class violinist and HKUST Honorary Fellow, Ms. YAO Jue. The gala triumphantly raised over HK$35 million. The funds will serve as a powerful catalyst for the University’s initiatives in talent development and groundbreaking research, paving a fertile ground for generations to come.
