HKUST Ranks No 1 in Asia for Third Straight Year

2013-06-11

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was just named the top university in Asia for the third straight year by the highly reputable Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings: Asia.

Mr Ben Sowter, Head of Research at QS Intelligence Unit highlighted that Asian higher education is undergoing a rapid transformation, and China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Korea are at the forefront of the assault on the global academic leadership positions. There are already 17% more Asian universities in the global top 200 since the recession, and the next two decades could see leading US and European universities objectively overtaken.

Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST said, “As a focused elite research university, HKUST has championed innovative and interdisciplinary studies to address challenges in global development, while fostering an international outlook that promotes quality education and a vibrant, inspirational environment for education and research.

“We are excited that HKUST has received the highest ranking in Asia for three straight years, and are heartened by the extensive recognition given to the University by the international community. However, HKUST’s goal lies not with the achievement of high rankings. We set our sights on achieving fully our mission in education and research, spurring all-round development of students and educating them to be global leaders contributing to society. Rankings give us an idea of where we stand and help us identify areas for further improvement. We will continue to uphold excellence in education and research and assist in the advancement of Hong Kong, the Mainland and the international community.”

QS is the world’s leading information specialist in the higher education sector with the mission of fostering educational achievement, international mobility and career development. With almost 500 universities examined and record response levels to its academic and employer surveys, the QS Asian University Rankings represent the most extensive study of Asian institutions ever conducted.
