HKUST Develops World's First Smart Anti-microbial Coating to Control Infectious Diseases
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announced the successful development of a smart anti-microbial coating that has the longest-lasting effect against the widest range of microbes."This revolutionary coating will set a new standard in the maintenance of public health, as it is easy to apply, safe to use, fast and effective in killing a wide spectrum of microbes, long-lasting, and environmentally friendly," said Prof King-Lun Yeung of HKUST's Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

HKUST Officially Welcomes New Students
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) officially welcomes all new students to the University today.
HKUST President Tony F Chan says at the University Welcome ceremony that HKUST aims to provide every student with a holistic education, and that apart from acquiring knowledge, students should also take part in various extracurricular activities, as well as establish fruitful relationships with professors and other students.
President Chan said that this year, the ratio of non-local undergraduate students at HKUST has risen to 16%, of which half is from the Mainland and half is from overseas.

HKUST announces appointment of Dr Eden Y Woon as Vice-President for Institutional Advancement
The Council of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today the unanimous approval of the appointment of Dr Eden Y Woon, JP as the University’s first Vice-President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA) starting this November.
The VPIA is the University’s chief relations and development officer. Working in partnership with the senior leadership team and the Council, the VPIA shall be charged with advancing the University’s long term strategic relations with various stakeholders-including alumni-and organizations in Hong Kong, and also in Mainland China and globally, and developing strategies to broaden the base of support for the University, and to generate greater levels of giving.

HKUST Engineering Students Design Innovative Tools to Help Elderly and Visually Challenged (In Chinese)
香 港 科 技 大 學(科 大)電 子 及 計 算 機 工 程 學 系 多 位 學 生 運 用 他 們 的 專 業 知 識 , 積 極 發 揮 創 意 , 並 親 身 接 觸 有 需 要 的 人 士 , 從 而 研 製 多 種 切 合 用 者 需 要 , 集 消 閒 、 娛 樂 與 復 康 於 一 身 的 工 具 。 這 些 工 具 包 括 幫 助 視 障 人 士 解 決 電 腦 文 檔 打 印 問 題 的 凸 字 打 印 機 、 延 緩 長 者 老 人 癡 呆 症 的 電 子 相 架 與 電 子 幻 方 、 訓 練 認 知 能 力 與 手 眼 協 調 的 電 子 釣 魚 遊 戲 機 、 及 讓 家 人 任 何 時 候 都 可 知 道 長 者 身 處 位 置 的 老 友 定 位 接 收 器 等 。
在 設 計 過 程 中 , 同 學 們 對 工 程 專 業 的 意 義 與 使 命 有 一 番 新 的 體 會 。 不 少 同 學 畢 業 後 加 入 復 康 設 計 行 業 , 或 在 研 究 院 中 進 一 步 研 究 針 對 不 同 人 士 的 復 康 工 具 。
畢 業 後 成 功 向 慈 善 基 金 自 薦 , 現 全 職 加 入 復 康 工 具 設 計 行 列 的 鄭 錦 添 表 示 : 「 我 在 科 大 開 始 接 觸 到 復 康 工 具 設 計 , 明 白 到 能 夠 延 緩 有 需 要 人 士 的 病 情 惡 化 , 及 讓 他 們 從 使 用 復 康 工 具 中 得 到 快 樂 , 是 件 非 常 有 意 義 的 事 情 。 認 清 方 向 以 後 , 我 就 與 兩 位 同 學 一 同 自 薦 加 入 全 職 設 計 的 行 列 。 」
雙 親 雙 目 失 明 的 李 君 栢 與 同 學 丁 健 民 發 明 凸 字 打 印 機 , 李 君 栢 表 示 : 「 我 體 會 到 雙 親 的 困 難 , 希 望 可 以 為 其 他 失 明 人 士 帶 來 佳 音 。 」 該 發 明 最 近 獲 2010 泛 珠 三 角 安 利 杯 大 學 生 計 算 機 作 品 比 賽 金 獎 及 最 佳 創 新 獎 。

HKUST Wins Grand Environmental Award for Waste Separation
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was presented a Special Grand Award for Cooperative Partnership by the Environmental Protection Department under its Source Separation of Commercial and Industrial Waste Scheme. HKUST is one of only three institutions in Hong Kong to win this award.
At the award presentation ceremony, HKUST Vice President for Administration and Business Prof YS Wong said, “We are delighted that our commitment to protecting the environment by source separation of waste has gained recognition. This is only one of our numerous initiatives to make our world a better place to live in for our younger generations. As a responsible corporate citizen, we will continue to step up our effort to achieve sustainability.”

HKUST Appoints Distinguished Physicist and Cosmologist as Director of Institute for Advanced Study
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today the appointment of Professor Henry Tye (戴 自 海 教 授) as Director of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) with effect from January 2011.
A distinguished theoretical physicist and cosmologist, Prof Tye’s primary research interest is in elementary particle theory, including topics such as high energy phenomena, interface between particle physics and cosmology and superstring theory. He is known for his contribution to the inflationary universe scenario, which is generally accepted as the way our universe began. Prof Tye is a world renowned scientist whose primary accomplishment in recent years has been on the “brane world” scenario, a new description of the universe that emerges naturally in the superstring theory.
