HKUST and University of Toronto Sign Agreement for Academic Cooperation
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of Toronto (U of T) have reached an agreement for academic and research cooperation, working towards a joint venture in PhD education which allows students to conduct academic exchange at both universities. Under this agreement, both universities are committed to developing joint activities and programs for academic, scientific and technological exchange and cooperation in the broad fields of science and engineering. It is envisaged that both parties would start the realization of collaborative PhD education within the coming few years.

CERN Physicist Prof John Ellis To Speak On Cosmos' Basic Questions At UC RUSAL President's Forum
UC RUSAL (SEHK: 486, Euronext: RUSAL/RUAL, Moscow Exchange: RUALR/RUALRS), a leading global aluminium producer, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invite Prof John Ellis, Clerk Maxwell Professor of Theoretical Physics at King's College London and Physicist at European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) to speak at the UC RUSAL President's Forum on 12 April 2013. Hosted by Prof Tony F Chan, President of HKUST, the UC RUSAL President's Forum will feature the world-renowned British theoretical physicist and Maxwell Medalist Prof John Ellis. He will share insights on the prospects of finding the answers posed in Paul Gauguin's famous paintings: "What are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going?" In particular, Prof Ellis will focus on the new particle discovered recently at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, which may be the Higgs boson that provides the masses of elementary particles, making possible the existence of atoms.

HKUST Professor Vincent Kin-nang Lau Named Croucher Senior Research Fellow
Prof Vincent Kin-nang Lau, Professor of Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was conferred the prestigious Croucher Senior Research Fellowship by the Croucher Foundation for his excellent scientific research achievements. The presentation ceremony held today (21 March) was officiated by Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBS, JP, Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR Government.

HKUST Hosts Environment Week Fostering Green Campus Life and Waste Reduction
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) launches its Environment Week starting today under the theme of 'Energy and Waste - Challenges for a Sustainable Planet'. HKUST Research Teams Led by Prof Nancy Ip and Prof Benzhong Tang Awarded Major 973 Program Grants
Two research projects led by Prof Nancy Ip, Dean of Science, Director of State Key Laboratory of Molecular Neuroscience, The Morningside Professor of Life Science, and Prof Benzhong Tang, Stephen Kam Chuen Cheong Professor of Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have been incorporated into the National Basic Research Program, better known as 973 Program, and awarded grants of over RMB 30 million respectively.

HKUST Holds the First Inauguration Ceremony of Named Professorships Partnership for Excellence
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the First Inauguration Ceremony of Named Professorships today to confer named professorships on 13 outstanding faculty members. Made under the University’s newly launched “HKUST Named Professorship Program”, the named professorship appointments are intended to foster the University’s education and research excellence by giving due recognition to the exceptional faculty. Addressing the ceremony, President Prof Tony F Chan said the professorship holders all excel in a diverse range of disciplines encompassing science, engineering, business, social science, life science, nanotechnology and others. Their education and research accomplishments have constantly been placed at the forefront of international scholarship, helping the University develop into a world-class research university. The honorees’ passion for teaching and research also sets an inspiring example for students’ learning and personal development.
