CAHE and HKUST Co-hosts "Mainland-Hong Kong-Macao High-Level University Presidents Roundtable" in Hong Kong
The "Mainland-Hong Kong-Macao High-Level University Presidents Roundtable" hosted by the China Association of Higher Education (CAHE) and co-organized by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), was successfully held in Hong Kong yesterday. Themed "University Missions and Collaborative Innovation in the Context of Building an Education Nation," the event featured a keynote speech by HUAI Jinpeng, Minister of Education of China, with opening remarks by CHAN Kwok-Ki, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, and LIN Huiqing, President of the China Association of Higher Education.

HKUST and CHMT Forge Strategic Partnership to Advance National Green Energy Goals
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and C.H.M.T. Peaceful Development Fund Management Limited (CHMT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a pivotal moment in accelerating new energy innovation through industry-academia-research collaboration. By combining HKUST’s world-class research capabilities with CHMT’s market expertise, the partnership will bridge laboratory breakthroughs with commercial deployment. The initiative seeks to drive advancements in new energy technology and sustainable development in line with the carbon neutrality ambitions in the 14th Five-Year Plan.

HKUST Scholar Prof. DAI Xi Awarded 2025 Future Science Prize – China’s Nobel Equivalent
Prof. DAI Xi, Dr William M W Mong Professor of Nanoscience and Chair Professor of Physics at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been awarded the 2025 Future Science Prize in Physical Science, announced today by the Future Science Prize Committee. The honor recognizes his groundbreaking contributions to condensed matter physics and topological materials research. Founded in 2016, the Future Science Prize is China’s first world-class science award jointly established by scientists and entrepreneurs, often regarded as China’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize. Comprising three categories: Life Science, Physical Science, as well as Mathematics and Computer Science – the Prizes honor scientists for outstanding accomplishments in these fields and exceptional contributions to research in Greater China. Each award carries a prize of up to US$1 million.

HKUST Institute for Emerging Market Studies, EY and Golden Age Foundation Sign MoU to advance “Smart Ecosystem for the Silver Population” in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Institute for Emerging Market Studies, EY1 and Golden Age Foundation have jointly announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to officially activate the development of the “Smart Ecosystem for the Silver Population” in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). This initiative aims to promote the development of the region’s elderly care industry. The signing ceremony, held during the “BOC Life 10th Golden Age Expo and Summit”, was witnessed by Mr. Ho Kai Ming, JP, Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has signed a tripartite framework agreement with global apparel manufacturer Crystal International Group Limited (Crystal Group) and the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) to integrate advanced artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the textile production process. By developing industry-specific large language model Textile-GPT for textiles, the collaboration aims to enhance intelligent design, optimize production process, streamline supply chain management, automate quality inspections, and foster innovation in smart wearables.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and renewable energy systems, making efficient recycling crucial for sustainability. A research team led by Prof. Dan TSANG, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has revealed a previously unrecognized atomic-scale mechanism that obstructs efficient LIB recycling. This breakthrough challenges long-standing assumptions and sets the stage for cleaner, high-yield recovery of critical metals used in LIBs.
