A Future Crafted by Global Citizens: HKUST Joins Hands with Stanford University to Launch “Sustainability Olympics”
How will our collective future take shape? Our students may have the answer. To empower global citizens to build a safer, more resilient world, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) joins hands with Stanford University as a founding partner to launch the Global Sustainability Challenge.
This competition represents a powerful collaboration between sustainability and education experts. By pooling experience and expertise, the competition was shaped by founding partners from prestigious institutions as founding universities, such as Imperial College London, Zhejiang University, Technical University of Munich, and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
The idea of a “Sustainability Olympics” initiative was conceived at the 2024 World Economic Forum in Davos, where HKUST President Prof. Nancy IP participated as the sole university president from Hong Kong. During a discussion led by Dr. Arun MAJUMDAR, Dean of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, he highlighted the potential for universities to collaborate on addressing sustainability challenges by leveraging their students’ solutions that address diverse local issues.
At the Forefront of Sustainable Energy and Climate Change
The competition’s inaugural year centers on two themes: “Sustainable Energy” and “Adaptation & Resilience”, where HKUST serves as the theme lead in both domains backed by its renowned research excellence. The University is also the regional ambassador, alongside Zhejiang University, for Pacific Asia and Australasia regions.
