Prof. Tim CHENG, Vice-President for Research and Development at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) warmly hosted a delegation from the Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN) on November 21, joined by Prof. Penger TONG, Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Research) and Dr. Shin Cheul KIM, Associate Vice-President for Research and Development (Knowledge Transfer).

The delegation was led by Prof. Balázs GULYÁS, President of HUN-REN, accompanied by Mr. Roland JAKAB, Chief Executive Officer, and Ms. Barbara Ning BÁLINT, International Scientific Secretary.

With a shared vision to pioneer the development and application of AI across interdisciplinary fields, both parties engaged in productive discussions on potential collaborations, including joint academic events, faculty-led workshops, and seed fund initiatives aimed at strengthening research ties and advancing innovation.

The delegation also visited HKUST’s Von Neumann Institute, an AI research center dedicated to large language models and multi-modal world models. Named after John von Neumann, the renowned Hungarian-born mathematician and computer scientist, the Institute reflects HKUST’s cutting edge AI applications in biomedicine, smart manufacturing, and dual-arm robotic collaboration for assembly.

This visit marks an important step towards building impactful partnerships and expanding academic and research engagement with Hungarian scientific communities.
