Echoing the HKSAR Government’s strategy to develop artificial intelligence (AI) as a core industry, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announced the establishment of the Von Neumann Institute (VNI). This pioneering research institute is dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration by integrating embodied intelligence, generative AI, and advanced supercomputing to drive new quality productive forces in the evolving era of AI.

HKUST’s Prof. Fugee TSUNG Awarded Prestigious 2025 Shewhart Medal, the “Nobel Prize of Quality Control”
Prof. Fugee TSUNG, Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Chair Professor of Data Science & Analytics Thrust and Computational Media & Arts Thrust at HKUST (Guangzhou), has been honored with the 2025 Shewhart Medal by the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Widely regarded as the “Nobel Prize in the quality field,” this accolade recognizes Prof. Tsung’s transformative contributions to statistical process control, industrial quality improvement, and academic leadership. He joins an elite group of Chinese scholars to receive this award since its inception in 1948.

HKUST and Shanghai SSCI Sign Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement
Recently, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Shanghai State-owned Capital Investment Co., Ltd. (Shanghai SSCI) held a signing ceremony for a Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreement to explore comprehensive collaboration in areas such as fund cooperation, technology transfer, and talent cultivation. At the signing ceremony, Dr. Timothy SZE, Director of the Office of Mainland Affairs at HKUST, and Ms. LU Wen, Party Committee Member and Vice President of Shanghai SSCI, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective parties. Prof. GUO Yike, HKUST’s Provost, and Dr. DAI Minmin, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Shanghai State-owned Capital Investment Co., Ltd., attended the event and witnessed the signing.

New Era of Magnetization: HKUST Research Sheds Light on Future Applications in Spintronics and Valleytronics
Altermagnets, which exhibit momentum-dependent spin splitting without spin–orbit coupling (SOC) or net magnetization, have recently attracted significant international attention. A team led by Prof. LIU Junwei from the Department of Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), along with their experimental collaborators, published their latest research findings in Nature Physics*, which unveiled the first experimental observation of a two-dimensional layered room-temperature altermagnet, validating the theoretical predictions in Nature Communications made by Prof. Liu in 2021.
