As a staunch supporter of sustainable living, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) community organizes numerous green activities. A summer garage sale with around 190 stalls of new and secondhand goods was held last Saturday and there will be another sale this Saturday (6 June), supporting the 5Rs (Recycle-Reuse-Reduce-Replace-Rethink) campaign and sustainability.
The biannual Garage Sale, namely Summer Garage Sale and Winter Garage Sale, was first held in 1996. This year, due to the overwhelming demand for tables, there will be two events in the summer and two in the winter. Individuals and organizations sell vintage and new goods at the Garage Sale, in line with the 5Rs campaign. Mrs Jean Hudson, the garage sale coordinator, said that one person’s trash could be another person’s treasure, the event could benefit the environment through waste prevention and raise awareness on sustainable development. She is delighted that the event has grown in popularity which enables more donations be made to charities.
As in previous years, the proceeds from the table hire fees will be donated to charities for various causes. The fund raised this year will go to the HKUST Student Social Service Society for supporting their community services in Vietnam, as well as the Nepal Earthquake disaster fund and the HKESA Summer Camp for helping underprivileged children in Hong Kong. Some of the goods donated at the Garage Sale will also be sent to a voluntary charitable organization in Burma for helping children in poverty-stricken areas.
The Garage Sale is an event for the community. The stalls are not only run by HKUST staff and their families, students and alumni, but also charitable organizations and members of the general public from all over Hong Kong. An extensive variety of new and secondhand goods are displayed including books, toys, organic food, beauty products, household products and electronic items.
Admission to the garage sale is free. Parking is available.
