HKUST Community to Organize Summer Garage Sale for Fun and Sustainability

2012-05-31

A garage sale with over 190 stalls of new and pre-loved goods will be held in the covered car park at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) this Saturday (2 June).

In line with the commitment of HKUST to environmental sustainability, the biannual Garage Sale endorses the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (3Rs) campaign.

Mrs Jean Hudson, the garage sale coordinator, takes delight in the enthusiastic reception by the HKUST community, outside organizations and general public at large. That the event is well-received by the charitable organizations adds to it even more significance. As in previous years, the proceeds from the table hire fees will be donated to charities for the benefit of many people in a variety of ways. This is a fun and enjoyable community event.

In addition to HKUST staff and their families, students and alumni, holders also include a wide variety of charitable and non-profit making organizations. The Busy Bees Kindergarten founded by HKUST parents is selling food and drinks to raise funds for the Kindergarten. Moreover, the children who attend Busy Bees will be actively involved in selling home-made compost and potted herbs, the compost being supplied by Zero Food Waste Sai Kung campaign by Teng Hoi, a non-governmental organization involved with environmental educational programs with kindergartens, schools and universities. A specialist coffee house based in Sai Kung and Hummingfish, a non-profit organization supporting the development of community projects and education for the people of East Timor, are joining their efforts in selling fair-trade 100% organic coffee from East Timor.

The event also features other non-profit making organizations including Heifer International 'Read to Feed' program, the People's Food Bank and the 64th East Kowloon Girl Guides, in which children and students are raising money for people less fortunate than themselves by selling their books, toys, home-made cakes and cookies.

A specifically designated area is available for people to donate items in good condition that they no longer require and these in turn are given to charities in Hong Kong, Mainland China and South East Asia which are supported by HKUST student charities. The HKUST Student Social Services Society are helping with the sorting and boxing all the donated goods.

Parking, food and drinks are available. Admission to the garage sale is free.
