HKUST’s Response to the Tuition Fee Adjustment for UGC-funded Programs

2024-06-20

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) acknowledges the decision made by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government and the University Grants Committee (UGC) regarding the phased adjustment of tuition fees for UGC-funded programs.

As one of the eight UGC-funded universities, HKUST understands that an increase in tuition is necessary given the fees have remained unchanged for over 20 years, leading to a significant decline in the cost recovery rate for subsidized degree programs. We believe that the government has taken into account the state of Hong Kong’s economic development, the affordability of different families, and the government’s commitment to the development of higher education when considering the extent of tuition fee adjustments. This is to ensure the continued provision of quality higher education in Hong Kong.  HKUST will make necessary adjustments in accordance with the government’s latest tuition fee policy.

At HKUST, we offer various financial aid schemes for students who require financial assistance. Furthermore, the University provides a wide range of scholarships to recognize outstanding academic achievements, as well as exceptional accomplishments in non-academic areas such as sports, arts, or innovation and entrepreneurship. There is no limit to the number of available awards.
