HKUST Announces Appointment of Mark Hodgson as Vice-President for Administration and Business

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today the appointment of Mr Mark Hodgson to succeed Prof Yuk-shan Wong as Vice-President for Administration and Business (VPAB), starting from September.

Mr Hodgson has over 26 years of experience in senior finance and administrative positions. He is currently Chief Financial Officer at Aston University, UK, covering a range of financial, business, estates and legal functions. He also plays a business role in the commercialization activities of the university's research. His appointment is the result of a rigorous global search.

The Vice-President for Administration and Business is responsible for the planning and management of manpower, financial, physical and other resources to ensure delivery of services in support of the academic and research activities of the University, as well as strategic overview of administrative resources at HKUST.

Dr Marvin K T Cheung, Chairman of the HKUST Council, expressed his delight in having Mr Hodgson join the senior leadership team. "With his extensive experience in finance and administration across a number of global organizations and blue chip companies, I have no doubt Mr Hodgson will bring with him best practices from the corporate sector which will assist us in the advancement of our missions," he said.

Prof Tony F Chan, President of the HKUST, added, "We are very glad to attract an accomplished executive such as Mr Hodgson. With his substantial experience in finance and business, and his latest stint in a university setting, he is well-positioned to further HKUST's causes by leading the administrative and business functions of the University. I look forward to working with him as a member of the University's senior management team."

Mr Hodgson was Vice-President Finance and IT for the Microbiology Division of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc, a global manufacturer and distributor of microbiological culture media and other diagnostic products, from 2004 to 2012.

Prior to that, he held senior finance positions at Unilever for 16 years, including Program Director Financial Shared Services Europe; Finance and IT Director at Unilever Poland; and Vice-President Finance at Crosfield Chemicals, USA, a subsidiary of the Unilever group. He also worked at Deloitte and Shell during his early career.

Mr Hodgson holds an Honors Degree (First Class) in Mathematics, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics from the University of Warwick and is an associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

Prof Yuk-shan Wong, who is set to leave HKUST on 31 March 2014, will remain a life-long member of the University family as an Emeritus Professor.
