HKUST Professor Bestowed with France’s “Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite”
Prof. Veronique LAFON-VINAIS, Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Finance at HKUST Business School, was bestowed the rank of “Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite” on Mar 3 at the Residence of the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to sustainable finance education.The honor was presented by Mrs. Christile DRULHE, Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, on March 3. The award recognizes Prof. Lafon-Vinais’ role in advancing sustainability in finance and in strengthening collaboration between France and Hong Kong.Reflecting on the recognition, Prof. Lafon-Vinais said the award also acknowledged the collective efforts of colleagues who have worked over the past decades to advance sustainable development and the growth of sustainable and green finance. She added that she was proud of the many interdisciplinary achievements made at HKUST.

HKUST Hosts Naming Ceremony of Futu Academic Pavilion
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a generous donation of HKD 30 million from Futu Securities International (Hong Kong) Limited (Futu) to support the University’s innovation and research development, as well as to establish a new scholarship recognizing outstanding HKUST students. In appreciation of Futu’s dedicated support, the University has named a multi-purpose learning facility at the Lee Shau Kee Library as the “Futu Academic Pavilion,” which serving as a key academic center for its faculty and students to engage in teaching, group discussions, and individual learning. This initiative not only underscores the importance of industry-academia collaboration in talent development but also lays a solid foundation for long-term cooperation between the two parties.

HKUST Hosts Spring Media Reception
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology held its annual Spring Media Reception on March 2. HKUST Study Reveals Why Tropical Cyclones Rainfall Surges Before Landfall
A research team at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has analyzed 40 years of data covering around 1,500 tropical cyclones and discovered that average rain rates surge by more than 20% in the 60 hours before landfall. The study is also the first to clearly identify the physical mechanisms behind this increase, showing that rising humidity over coastal areas and enhanced land-sea frictional contrasts strengthen convection, intensifying rainfall ahead of landfall. The results provide valuable insights for improving coastal disaster preparedness and early‑warning systems.

HKUST Develops First AI Toolkit “GrainBot” to Automate Quantitative Microstructure Analysis
A research team from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has developed GrainBot, an AI-enabled toolkit that automatically extracts and quantifies multiple microstructural features from microscopy images. Designed to meet the growing need for data-driven and autonomous research workflows in materials science, the tool provides a systematic method for converting complex image information into quantitative data, thereby accelerating the discovery and development of next-generation materials.

Our alumni community joined “The opening ceremony of the Alumni Commons and A Feast of Togetherness – Poon Choi Party.” on January 17, 2026 (Saturday) on the Clear Water Bay campus at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). HKUST President Prof. Nancy IP Welcomes 2026-27 Budget
Prof. Nancy IP, President of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), warmly welcomes the 2026-27 Budget delivered today by the Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. She said, "2026 marks the outset of the nation's '15th Five-Year Plan'. The Budget sets out important initiatives to enable Hong Kong to proactively align with national strategies, integrate into the country's overall development, and drive long-term, high quality development for both the nation and Hong Kong."
