HKUST Confers Honorary Fellowships on Five Distinguished Individuals

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today conferred Honorary Fellowships on five distinguished leaders for their significant contributions to society and unwavering support for the University. The recipients are Ms. Bonnie Yiting CHAN, Mr. Rembert LAI Siu-Kin, Mr. PAN Yi, Prof. WU Hung, and Dr. YU Long (listed in alphabetical order by surname). The conferral ceremony was officiated by Prof. Harry SHUM, Council Chairman of HKUST, and Prof. Nancy IP, President of HKUST.

Prof. Shum commended the five awardees for their exemplary achievements, profound societal contributions, and steadfast commitment to the University. He remarked, “As HKUST celebrates its 35th anniversary, this year's Honorary Fellows have distinguished themselves through exceptional achievements and leadership in their respective fields. Beyond their professional accomplishments, they have made invaluable contributions to HKUST as trusted advisors, steadfast partners, alumni leaders, and dear friends, helping to advance the University's development and broaden its impact. Their diverse experiences, distinguished accomplishments, and unwavering commitment to excellence exemplify the values we hold dear as a community. On behalf of the University Council, I extend my warmest congratulations to this year's Honorary Fellows and am delighted to welcome them into the HKUST family.”

President Ip extended her congratulations and gratitude to these esteemed leaders for their staunch support of the University. Ms. Bonnie Yiting CHAN is the Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX), where she leads one of the world’s most important financial market institutions. In this role, she helps reinforce Hong Kong’s position as a global financial center. A lawyer, capital markets expert, and respected reformer, she has advanced initiatives that improve market competitiveness, support innovation-driven enterprises, and promote board diversity. As a member of the HKUST Business School Advisory Council, she actively supports the development of future business leaders and innovators. (Full citation)

Mr. Rembert LAI Siu-Kin is an accomplished architect and Partner and Director of Lu Tang Lai Architects Ltd, who has contributed to the built environment across Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, and Southeast Asia. Known for his human-centric designs that create vibrant and sustainable places for people, he has generously shared his professional insights and expertise through public service, including his invaluable contributions to HKUST as a former Council Member and Chair of the Campus Development Committee, where he supported major campus development initiatives, including HKUST(GZ). Mr. PAN Yi is a visionary entrepreneur and investor, recognized for co-founding Shenzhen Inovance Technology Co., Ltd and building it into a global leader in intelligent manufacturing and motion-control technologies. His work has advanced the digitalization of China’s manufacturing sector and the development of sustainable transportation solutions. Through Value Capital, he supports innovation in advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, and AI. Committed to education and social impact, he has expanded access to technology and learning opportunities for young people through philanthropy. As Chair of the HKUST EMBA Alumni Association (2023 - 2025), he fostered a more connected and engaged alumni community. (Full citation)

Prof. WU Hung, Harrie A. Vanderstappen Distinguished Service Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago, stands as one of the world’s foremost scholars of Chinese art history. Prof. Wu has done more than most to bring Chinese visual culture to a wider audience through pioneering research, influential publications, and landmark exhibitions. His contributions earned him the College Art Association’s Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing on Art and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He continues to foster cross-cultural dialogue on art, history, and society, including through his engagement with HKUST, such as the lecture series titled “The Global Impact of Research in Chinese Art” in 2023. Dr. YU Long is an internationally acclaimed conductor who has been a leading figure in advancing classical music in China and fostering East-West cultural exchange. As Founder of the Beijing Music Festival, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, he has elevated Chinese orchestras onto the global stage while championing young talent and artistic excellence.
