HKUST Scholar Receives DuPont Young Professors Award

2007-09-29

HKUST Chemistry Professor Dr Hongkai Wu has been named a DuPont Young Professor, the only local candidate from Hong Kong to have won the honor for 2007-09.

Dr Wu will receive a grant for three consecutive years starting 2007 to conduct research on microfluidics, bioanalytical science and materials chemistry.

The DuPont Young Professor Grant Program provides start-up assistance to the most promising young and untenured research faculty members in areas of interest to DuPont.

“Our research team will use the grant to further our research on microfluidics, bioanalytical science and materials chemistry. We use the technologies in MEMS, microfluidics, soft lithography, and surface chemistry to design and provide new tools for the application and understanding of fundamentals in materials and biological sciences, including microfluidic chemical reactors, high throughput single-cell analysis and chemical separations.” remarked Dr Wu.

“It is my great pleasure to be selected a recipient of the DuPont Young Professors Award this year. This award is a recognition of an international scale of our past research efforts and a tremendous boost to our future projects. I am very grateful to DuPont for the honor. The grant will substantially help our setting up a new research lab at HKUST.”

Wu said, “I would like to share this award with my students whom I depend on to bring my ideas to fruition.”

Dr Wu joined HKUST as Assistant Professor in Chemistry in February this year. He obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 2002 from Harvard University after receiving his BS and MS degrees from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1995 and 1997, a University famous for pioneering Special Class for the Gifted Young.

He did his postdoctoral research in the Department of Chemistry at Stanford University (USA) before joining the Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University in November, 2005.

Dr Wu is one of the 15 international young scholars to be bestowed the honor. Other DuPont Young Professors for the academic years 2007-2009 included some of the most promising young researchers from China, Israel, Brazil and North America.

Since the inception of this award scheme in 1968, DuPont has given out over 500 Young Professors Awards, many awardees have continued to win international recognition for the scientific or technological breakthrough they have made.
