Where Code Meets Grit: Inside HKUST’s 24/7 Dream Team Hub
Inside a collaborative sanctuary beneath the student residences, HKUST engineering teams push through sleepless crunch sessions, turning classroom formulas into battle-tested innovations.
Trial by Fire on the Battlefield
Preparation inside the HKUST Robotics Team's lab reached fever pitch in the weeks leading up to the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) Hong Kong Contest in the early summer.
As the premier university robotics competition in the Asia-Pacific region, the ABU Robocon is one of the ultimate proving grounds for student engineers.
To get these machines battle-ready for such a high-stakes regional stage, students pushed through grueling 24- to 36-hour marathons, endlessly refining code and debugging hardware.
“One late night, I saw a teammate collapse into sleep at his workbench out of exhaustion!” recalls NG Tsz-Lok, a member of the HKUST Robocon team.
Immediately adjacent to that workbench, the half-assembled chassis for HKUST’s two tournament entries, Fiery Dragon and War Dragon, rested quietly amid a maze of circuitry, mechanical joints, and custom wiring.
Yet as pressure mounted, relief came through shared bonds. “Whenever I face difficulties and stress, I try to share those moments with my teammates, so we don’t feel as lonely. It makes the effort worthwhile,” shares Matthew CHUNG Yin-Chun, fellow Robocon team member.
On contest day inside the Grand Hall at Hong Kong Science Park, those machines stepped into the spotlight. Fielded by the HKUST Robotics Team against top local university entries under this year's martial-arts-inspired theme, "Kung Fu Master," bots from Fiery Dragon and War Dragon navigated intricate obstacle courses. They executed precision physical tasks requiring speed, balance, and complex algorithmic coordination.
Win or lose, representing HKUST on that arena floor was already the true triumph. This drive is rooted in a vibrant and collaborative culture back on campus, where student innovators continuously transform abstract theory into reality.
Innovations Under One Roof
That same drive continues day and night at the Dream Team Hub, a dedicated collaborative sanctuary established under the School of Engineering’s Center for Global & Community Engagement (GCE), located on the ground floor of Student Residence Halls 8 and 9.
Envisioned and established by GCE Director Prof. Tim WOO in 2020, the Dream Team Hub breaks down campus silos. It provides student innovators with a dedicated home for hands-on, cross-disciplinary creation.
“The Dream Team Hub is more than a shared workspace for student teams,” Prof. Woo says. “It is designed as a platform for knowledge transfer, experience sharing, and collective growth. By bringing different student teams together, we hope to create a larger, stronger cross-disciplinary student community at HKUST, where students from different academic backgrounds can support one another, share knowledge more effectively, and inspire peers to explore diverse engineering fields and emerging technologies.”
Beyond competitions, the Hub also empowers students to join hands in promoting engineering to the wider community through initiatives such as STEAM Day @ HKUST.
“Through these outreach opportunities, our students can share their passion with the public and show that they are capable of far more than people may imagine — not only as contributors to innovative projects, but also as young talents with creativity, dedication, and a keen sense of purpose,” Prof. Woo explains.
Student engineers pilot their newly minted machine across custom test tracks inside the Dream Team Hub workspace, relentlessly refining their complex algorithmic coordination before match day.
Blending different academic perspectives sparks a shared curiosity and creates close-knit bonds among the builders.
In addition to the workspaces in Student Residence Halls 8 and 9, the Fei Chi En Dream Team Open Lab opposite the Engineering Commons is another maker space where student teams can turn innovation into competition-ready prototypes.
Team members are actively building a community of young innovators through outreach activities like STEAM Day @ HKUST.
The Alchemy of the Workplace
Step inside the labs during peak build season, and your senses light up all at once: the sharp tang of rosin solder mixing with late-night instant noodles, the steady hum of 3D printers, and energetic debates over circuit design.
Before the Hub brought everyone under one roof, HKUST’s student engineering groups operated in isolated pockets across campus. Today, co-locating them gives four flagship groups a unified launchpad:
The HKUST Aero Team is a dynamic squad competing globally in radio-controlled aircraft and aerospace engineering payload challenges.
Driving advancements in electric racing vehicles, HKUST Red Bird Racing (EVRT) operates as the university's official Formula Student team.
The HKUST Robotics Team is home to four specialized sub-teams—Robocon, Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), Intelligent Racing, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)—with a legacy of around 200 regional, national, and international awards.
Rounding out the community is the HKUST RoboMaster Team ENTERPRIZE, a five-time international champion in the prestigious RoboMaster University Series.
Putting Prof. Woo’s vision into practice, the Hub proactively blends engineering muscle with diverse academic talent. While the teams naturally attract engineering and science students, teammates from interdisciplinary studies, business, or the humanities and social sciences collaborate seamlessly with their peers. For those coming from non-technical backgrounds, business acumen, and strategic communication come in handy when crafting proposals, articulating strategies, and pitching projects in high-stakes competitions.
Creative Testbeds Beyond the Labs
Inside the Hub, hardware engineers, software developers, and electronics designers work side-by-side on custom test tracks built to mirror competition fields. But the testing grounds extend far beyond the lab doors, turning the entire campus into an open-air laboratory.
Passing the Torch (and the Soldering Iron)
Every September, the Hub’s energy shifts into high gear as senior members of the Robotics Team set up interactive campus booths and recruit about 200 prospective students for the new year. These recruits divide into small teams to design and build prototype robots for the HKUST Robot Design Contest, the annual internal robotics competition held in the HKUST Atrium each November.
With up to eight teams rotating through the shared workspace, this autumn’s rush is likely to be the most intense stretch of the year for the Hub. For a few weeks, the workshop floor pulsates with fresh energy as new blood injects bold concepts into the innovation engine.
Taking turns at the workbenches, these recruits quickly adapt to the fast-paced culture with the intense curiosity of eager apprentices. Senior members step up as coaches, guiding rookies through foundational engineering while instilling the community's core values.
A Family in Wire and Code
When the dust settles on the ABU Robocon match field, a cherished ritual unfolds: returning alumni crowd onto the stage to lock arms with current members for the annual team photo, celebrating a shared journey defined by camaraderie and resilience.
“Legacy isn’t just about passing on technical skills. It's also about how to work as a team,” asserts Prof. Woo, reflecting on his long-time journey mentoring generations of builders. “Every cohort of students is different. So today, I am still learning right alongside them.”
That family-like bond also connects to the creative incubator in Residence Halls 8 and 9, where HKUST students perfect complex machines and engineer their futures.
