Young HKUST Biochemist Awarded Research Funding from National Natural Science Foundation
Dr. Fwu-Shan Sheu, Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry Department at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has received RMB 400,000 in funding from the Overseas Young Scholar Collaboration Research Grant 1999 of the National Natural Science Foundation.
The Foundation received a total of 807 applications from overseas scientists in the field of biomedical sciences in 1999. Dr. Sheu is the only one in the field of life sciences and also one of the three young Hong Kong scientists in all the fields to be awarded research funds from the Foundation last year.
Dr. Sheu's research topic is "The redox effect of nitric oxide on single ion channel activities: a study of molecular mechanism for neural plasticity". Dr. Sheu's research is likely to have positive impact on the development of drugs on enhancing memory in learning.
Dr. Sheu was a PhD student at Northwestern University for seven years before joining the American National Institute of Health for post-doctorate research for three years. He joined HKUST as an Assistant Professor in 1994.
