Two HKUST Computer Science Academics Elected IEEE Fellows

Prof Mounir Hamdi and Prof Bo Li of Computer Science and Engineering Department (CSE) at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have both been elected Fellows of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Prof Hamdi and Prof Li are experts on networking and communications. In its citation, the IEEE honors Prof Hamdi for “his contributions to design and analysis of high-speed packet switching”, and Prof Li for his “contributions to content distribution via the internet”.

Fellowship of IEEE is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on individuals with an outstanding record of accomplishments in the field of engineering. The total number of IEEE Fellows selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one- percent of the total voting membership.

IEEE is a non-profit professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation in various areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics. Currently having 395,000 members in more than 160 countries, IEEE is the world’s largest professional association of its kind.

Prof Hamdi received his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Louisiana in 1985, and the MS and the PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987 and 1991 respectively. He joined HKUST in 1991 and is currently Chair Professor and Head of the CSE Department at the University.

Prof Li joined HKUST in 1996 and currently is a professor of the CSE Department. He received his BEng and MEng degrees in the Computer Science from Tsinghua University in 1987 and 1989 respectively, and the PhD degree in the Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1993.
