NTT DoCoMo VP Shares Insights into Mobile Applications Beyond 3G

Dr Minoru Etoh, Deputy Managing Director of NTT DoCoMo Research Laboratories and Vice President of NTT DoCoMo, a leading mobile communications company in the world, delivered a distinguished lecture today (Friday) on "Insights into Mobile Applications beyond 3G" at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).

This was the first lecture given by Dr Etoh at a Hong Kong university. In his lecture, Dr Etoh shared with the audience the current progress of mobile multimedia applications in Japan's broadband cellular environment. He explored the potential expansion of wireless broadband to "fixed-line" internet applications, in addition to the capacity of music download and video clip delivery.

Dr Etoh also identified how mobile specific aspects such as mobile multimedia area, mobile advertisement and e-commerce have enriched our daily life and gave his insights into the future development of mobile internet.

"The mobile infrastructure has brought a highly-personalized popular communication culture to us. In the next five years, we may have a different story, when cell-phone becomes an information hub in our daily life, and will be associated with real environment including motion sensor, GPS, health care devices, etc. That definitely differentiates mobile internet from fixed-line internet." Dr Etoh said.

About Dr Minoru Etoh

Dr Minoru Etoh is Deputy Managing Director of NTT DoCoMo Research Laboratories and Vice President of NTT DoCoMo in Japan. He joined Multimedia Laboratories of NTT DoCoMo in 2000, where he contributed to launching DoCoMo's 3G mobile multimedia services including video phones and audio-visual content download applications. He served as Visiting Professor of Nara Institute of Science and Technology in 2003-2006, and is still teaching mobile communication technologies in Osaka University. He received his B.E. and M.S.E.E. from Hiroshima University, and a Ph.D. degree from Osaka University, in 1983, 1985 and 1993 respectively.
