HKUST to Confer Honorary Doctorates on Eminent Academics and Leaders

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will be conferring honorary doctorates on four eminent academics and community leaders in recognition of their illustrious contributions and achievements. Chief Executive of HKSAR Government and HKUST Chancellor, the Hon Donald Tsang, will officiate at the conferment ceremony on 13 November (Friday) at HKUST's 17th Congregation.

The four recipients and the honorary degrees they will receive are:

Dr CHAN Cho-Chak John - Doctor of Social Science honoris causa

Prof Gregory C CHOW - Doctor of Business Administration honoris causa

Prof Daniel C TSUI - Doctor of Science honoris causa

Dr the Hon Joseph YAM Chi-Kwong - Doctor of Business Administration honoris causa

Brief biography of the recipients

Dr CHAN Cho-Chak John

Dr Chan is currently non-executive director of Transport International Holdings Ltd. His career spanned the civil service and the commercial sector. In Government, his key positions included Private Secretary to Governor MacLehose, Deputy Chief Secretary, Secretary for Trade and Industry and Secretary for Education and Manpower. In the financial sector, he served as Chairman of the Hong Kong Securities Clearing and a Council Member of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. In the utilities sector, he had been Managing Director of Kowloon Motor Bus for 13 years. He also serves as Chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. At HKUST, he was a founding member of the Council and served as its Chairman from 2002 to 2008. He is currently Chairman of the Court.

Prof Gregory C CHOW

Prof Chow, Professor Emeritus of Princeton University, is an expert in dynamic economic problems. He has been elected a member of the American Philosophical Society and a fellow of the Econometric Society and of the American Statistical Association. His well-known "Chow test" is considered as standard reference for every student of econometrics. He has served as consultant to IBM, Data General Corporation and the World Bank.

Prof Daniel C TSUI

Prof Tsui is a co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1998. Prior to this, he received the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics, the highest honor in physical science in the US. In 1982, Prof Tsui, together with has colleague, experimentally discovered what has since become known as the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. This discovery has profoundly influenced the direction of inquiry in condensed matter physics over the past two and half decades. Prof Tsui is currently Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University.

Dr the Hon Joseph YAM Chi-Kwong

Dr Yam was the founding Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and, prior to his recent retirement, had served as its chief for sixteen and half years. During Dr Yam's tenure, he played an active role in establishing the Linked Exchange Rate, by which the Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US greenback. Dr Yam joined the Government in 1971 and the main part of his civil service career was with the Economic Services Branch and the Monetary Affairs Branch.
