HKUST China Economic Development Forum

2011-03-23

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) today hosted the China Economic Development Forum as part of HKUST's 20th anniversary celebrations. The Forum featured four distinguished speakers: Prof Justin Lin, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank; Prof David Li, Director of the Center for China in the World Economy of the Tsinghua University; Prof Yi Gang, Deputy Governor of the People's Bank of China and Administrator of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange; and Prof K.C. Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, HKSAR Government.

The Forum attracted over 400 guests from the HKUST community and members of the public to share insights on China's economic development with the four speakers, who each played a part in creating HKUST's world-class business school as current or former professors, and all are now playing important roles in the development of the Mainland and Hong Kong economies.

The Forum's first session explored the post-crisis growth strategies of China and the world, in which Prof Justin Lin spoke on "China and the Global Economy" and Prof David Li discussed "China's New Approach to Reform and Opening-up after the Global Financial Crisis".

The second session focused on the challenges and opportunities brought about by China's economic growth. Prof Yi Gang discussed the "Challenges Facing China's Fast Economic Growth", and Prof K.C. Chan explained the "Development of Renminbi Market in Hong Kong".

The keynote speeches were followed by panel discussions moderated by Prof Leonard Cheng, Dean of HKUST Business School and Prof Francis Lui, Head of Economics Department, HKUST Business School.

In his welcome remarks, Professor Tony F Chan, President of HKUST, said, "I am very pleased to see that HKUST has, over the past two decades, been a cradle for great minds. The four economists that we have with us today-all of whom former or present faculty members-have moved on to a much larger stage and have made great impact on the economic or financial scene in Hong Kong, on the Mainland, and even in the global arena. Indeed they are part of the HKUST miracle that people have been calling us as we celebrate our 20th anniversary."

Professor Leonard Cheng, Dean of HKUST Business School said, "I am grateful to our eminent speakers for sharing their expert views today-and for their part in the remarkable success of the HKUST Business School. They are making a heartwarming home return as speakers at this special event in celebration of the 20th anniversary of HKUST."
