HKUST and FSDC Hold Forum to Explore Career Opportunities in Financial Services

2015-10-07

The School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) and the Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) jointly hosted a forum on 5 October to give students a closer look at the wide variety of career opportunities in the financial services sector.

Entitled “Careers in Financial Services”, the forum is the fifth event under the FSDC's Practitioner Speakers Series, which aims to provide guidance to young graduates and university students and help them plan career paths in the financial industry. Around 100 students attended the forum to explore with a leading financial practitioner the career prospects in the sector.

The forum featured Senior Country Officer for Hong Kong at J.P. Morgan, Mr Andrew Butcher, who also serves as a member of the firm’s Asia Pacific Management Committee. In addition to sharing with participants his career experience, Mr Butcher outlined the latest developments in the local and regional financial services industry and discussed how these developments would redefine the requirements of the next generation of financial professionals.

In his remarks, Mr Butcher pointed out that the financial industry is one of the pillars of the Hong Kong economy, employing about 230,000 people locally and offering ample opportunities for graduates. Noting that the financial services sector has an increasing demand for talented young graduates, he encouraged participants to strengthen their industry knowledge and relevant skills in order to pursue a rewarding career in the financial services sector.

Professor Jitendra V. Singh, Dean of the HKUST Business School and Michael Jebsen Professor of Business, in his welcome remarks, said the continued success of Hong Kong as an international financial hub is in the hands of our aspiring young people. It is a positive development that the collaboration between universities and FSDC has successfully created an experience-sharing platform that helps nurture more financial talent for the city.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government established the FSDC in 2013 as a high-level, cross-sectoral advisory body to engage the industry in formulating proposals to promote the further development of Hong Kong's financial services industry and to map out the strategic direction for development. The FSDC’s Practitioner Speakers Series is a project organized by the FSDC and local universities, with speakers from the financial services industry giving talks to university students about important industry facts and the skill sets required in developing a career in financial services.
