The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series today featuring Mr Jay Nibbe, Global Vice Chair – Tax of leading assurance, tax, transaction and advisory services network EY. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST.
In his talk entitled “Disruption in business: what forces will shape our careers in the coming years?”, Mr Nibbe presented an overview on how disruptive forces such as technology and globalization will shape our careers and lives in the coming years.
“Technology is dramatically affecting entire industries,” Mr Nibbe said in his speech. “Globalization has accelerated trade liberalization and emerging market growth, and demographic shifts through migration, immigration and increased urbanization are having profound effects on workforces and economic development. Disruption is fundamentally changing the way the world works.”
Mr Nibbe shared his work experience in a modern-day, truly globalized company, and how having an international outlook can drive success in a global marketplace. He also provided guidance on what skill sets will make one globally employable and the characteristics that one needs to become a valued member of the global workforce.
Mr Nibbe joined EY in 1985, as its Global Vice Chair – Tax, he is responsible for developing the group’s tax network and leading more than 45,000 practitioners worldwide. London-based Mr Nibbe also chairs the group’s Tax Executive Committee, oversees tax business performance, identifies acquisition targets, and nurtures the growth of tax specialty practices and the law group.
Prior to his current position, Mr Nibbe was the Europe, Middle East, India & Africa (EMEIA) Markets Leader, Americas Vice Chair – Tax and Americas Tax Managing Partner. From 1995 to 1999, he was based in Moscow, leading the Commonwealth of Independent States tax practice and developing services in Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.
Speakers of the HKUST 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series include Nobel Prize laureates, corporate leaders, entrepreneurs and key financial policy shapers.
