Two professors at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) – Prof Ross Murch and Prof Qiang Yang – will be bestowed the honor of fellowship of the world’s leading professional association for the advancement of technology. Prof Murch and Prof Yang were admitted to the rank of Fellows of the IEEE for their exceptional contribution to wireless communications, and to intelligent planning, machine learning and data mining, respectively. IEEE, a global organization with 375,000 members in 160 countries, is dedicated to the fostering of technology innovation. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) conferred honorary doctorates on five academic and social leaders at its 16th Congregation today (Friday). HKUST’s Pro-Chancellor, Sir SY Chung, presided over today’s ceremony. The five recipients of the honorary doctorates were: Dr Chan Sui-Kau, Chairman of Yangtzekiang Garment Ltd (Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa) Prof Aaron Ciechanover, winner of Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2004) and Distinguished Research Professor, Faculty of Medicine, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology (Doctor of Science honoris causa) Prof David Gross, winner of Nobel Prize in Physics (2004) and Frederick W.Gluck Chair in Theoretical Physics, University of California at Santa Barbara (Doctor of Science honoris causa)

Over 80 members of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison, led by Major General Dong Wenjiu, spent a full day at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), meeting and interacting with the staff and students in a diversified range of activities. This is the first time the PLA Hong Kong Garrison visited HKUST. At the welcoming ceremony, HKUST President Paul Chu said that the People’s Liberation Army is the actualization of the strength and dignity of the Chinese nation, and the officers exhibited lofty patriotism and military discipline, which are inspirational to the staff and students of HKUST. Meanwhile, HKUST Students’ Union President Mr Max Yeung expressed his appreciation for the contribution of the Garrison to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Meanwhile, Major General Dong Wenjiu thanked HKUST for their hospitality and program arrangements enabling the officers to get a taste of the university’s unique ambience.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Friday, 10 October 2008) officially launched Hong Kong's first Tertiary Institutions Cantonese Opera Promotion Project. This one-year project aims to enhance the knowledge and appreciation of Cantonese Opera among students and staff of tertiary institutions, and is also another of HKUST's services to the community by giving volunteer performances and providing a free performance venue at HKUST for amateur groups. The opening ceremony at the Atrium of HKUST was officiated by the Chairman of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund Executive Committee and Advisory Committee Dr Stephen Chow; Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Wo Organization Ms Lisa Wang; renowned Cantonese Opera artiste Mr Law Ka-ying; and HKUST Vice-President for Academic Affairs Prof Roland Chin.
