HKUST Students Demonstrate Their Talents in Performing Arts
A group of local and international students at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have organized a Talent Quest to showcase the multifaceted talents within the student community. This event is one of the five winners in the recently-launched President's 1-HKUST Student Life Awards, aimed to enrich campus life and promote cultural exchange.
The nine performances selected for the final round encompassed not only individual and group singing, but also guitar and Chinese classical guzheng recitals as well as ballet. The participants included students from Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, India and other overseas countries.
The championship was captured by Anton Cheung Ho-Yu who staged a breathtaking beat-boxing performance, combining the sounds of Chinese and Western musical instruments with talking and singing. His immaculate skill won rounds of thunderous applause from the audience.

HKUST Shares Mystery of Musical Composition with General Public in The Intimacy of Creativity Series of Rehearsals and Concerts
As a highlight of the 20th anniversary celebration of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), The Intimacy of Creativity presents world-famous musicians from overseas who will play and discuss new music with world-famous and emerging composers. This event is hosted by HKUST's School of Humanities and Social Science (SHSS).
The Intimacy of Creativity is the first-of-its-kind series of music workshops and concerts in Hong Kong. In line with HKUST's commitment to nurturing all-rounded global leaders, SHSS is presenting this event as part of its music and humanities education research project. The Intimacy of Creativity introduces a new perspective in appreciating music by showcasing the creative process of a new work. By exposing HKUST students to this unique experience, the goal is to develop innovative and imaginative thinkers.

Charity Run for Japan Concludes Business Cohort Cup Championship
HKUST Business School students raised over HK$57,000 from a charity run on campus on 18 April to support the Hong Kong Red Cross Japan Earthquake 2011 relief work. The fundraising event was one of the initiatives of the HKUST Service Learning Day held on 14-18 April. It also marked the finale of a series of competitive social activities organized for the year-round Business Cohort Cup Championship.
Dubbed the "Turkey Run", the 1.5 km race with three checkpoint challenges attracted business undergraduates from ten Cohort teams to run in colourful turkey costumes of their original creative design. They were joined by a faculty team from the HKUST Business School, led by Dean Leonard Cheng, which also dressed in turkey costumes to participate in the competition. Each team had pledged to raise a minimum of HK$1,000 charity donation.

700 HKUST Staff and Students to Render Volunteer Service in 40 Projects This Weekend
Over 700 students and staff members of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will, over the next 4 days, render volunteer service in 40 projects, serving visually and hearing impaired people, underprivileged and sick children, senior citizens who are homeless or living alone, ethnic minority children, and even abandoned animals. The projects also include anti-drug activities, hospital visits, and environmental programs.
At today's kick-off ceremony, Hong Kong Spirit Ambassador 2010 Mr Wayne Chau shared his experience of metamorphosis - from a child in a poor village in Guangxi to an entrepreneur. Mr Chau is committed to community service and has founded a charitable organization called The Outstanding Givers. Mr Chau is also an HKUST alumnus graduating from the Computer Science Department.

HKUST President Tony F Chan and Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor Prof Sir Leszek Borysiewicz Share Insights into University Education
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) President Tony F Chan today had an inspiring dialogue with Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor Prof Sir Leszek Borysiewicz at the Presidents Dialogue at HKUST. Cambridge University is one of the world's top universities, with 89 of its faculty and alumni having won Nobel Prizes.
Prof Borysiewicz said that a world-class university must have focus and determination. He stressed that it is important to have good professors as they will attract good students. He stated that for Cambridge University, the key to success was the uncompromising pursuit of quality and excellence.
He said that while competition encourages improvement, collaboration is also conducive to growth. On the research front, he stated that both basic and applied research should run in parallel as both are of equal importance.
He added that HKUST has built a robust foundation and is primed for significant growth in the years to come.

Robots Command a Bigger Presence at HKUST
Robots are commanding a bigger and bigger presence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), as evident from the Program Parade of the School of Engineering held on campus today.
After the opening speeches by President Tony F Chan and Dean of Engineering Prof Khaled Ben Letaief, a robot took over the lectern and gave a 11-minute presentation covering the latest developments of the Engineering School and the special programs designed to celebrate HKUST's 20th Anniversary.
Prof Ben Letaief also announced that HKUST's Robotics Team has grown 75% in terms of membership, and has been divided into four sub-teams, each taking part in one of four major competitions - the "Robocon Hong Kong Contest", "Remotely Operated Vehicles Competition" featuring underwater robots; "Smart Car Competition" and "NAO Robocup".

HKUST Marketing Professor Anirban Mukhopadhyay Wins International Award for Consumer Insights
Professor Anirban Mukhopadhyay of the Marketing Department of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) has been honored with the Early Career Award from the Society for Consumer Psychology (SCP) for his outstanding research in marketing and consumer behavior.
The prestigious international award is given to honor a psychologist who is no more than eight years post-PhD and has made significant scientific contributions to consumer psychology. The SCP is an American-based organization that aims to further the advancement of the discipline of consumer psychology in a global context.

HKUST Awards Student Activities That Further the "1-HKUST" Concept and Enrich Campus Life
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today presents awards for five top student-initiated activities that enrich and give meaning to campus life.
Called "President's 1-HKUST Student Life Award", it is bestowed on five winning student activities that best enrich the student experience. Each activity will receive an average of about $10,000 in funding support.
Officiating at the presentation ceremony, HKUST President Tony Chan said that he had collected numerous novel suggestions from his monthly tea gatherings with students, and the Award aims to encourage students to exercise their creativity in designing and implementing activities that satisfy the four criteria of serving social needs, originality, feasibility, and having an impact on the student community.
