The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted the 25th Anniversary Distinguished Speakers Series yesterday, featuring Prof Zhong Lin Wang, Hightower Chair in Materials Science and Engineering and Regents’ Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, and Chief Scientist and Director at Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Nanosystems, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST. Speaking on “Nanogenerators for Self-powered Systems and Piezotronics for Smart Devices”, Prof Wang reflected on how he began his research, he said, "Everything made by human was driven by electricity. And I asked myself: can we use human mechano-sensation to drive power of electronic devices instead? Can we control electronics by imagination? I see a possibility."

The Forum marked the completion of the five-year partnership between HKUST and UC RUSAL and was well attended by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST & outside the university.

The event was well received by students, faculty members and guests from HKUST. Mr Wang Shi delivered a speech titled “Choosing Your Own Path” on how he founded Vanke, and how he drew a line in the sand by insisting on high moral business values. He also spoke on his passion for outdoor sports, especially mountain climbing, and how this sport made him realize the impact of global warming and led Vanke to choose the green path as its development strategy. An avid learner and a seasoned decision maker, Mr Wang shared his experience on leaving his comfort zone of business to study overseas, and how he learnt to make tough decisions on what to leave behind, and what to bring forward through Deep Dive initiatives.

The Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA (EMBA) program maintains its leading position in the world in this year's Financial Times EMBA global ranking. It has been ranked No.2, marking the program’s eleven consecutive years in the top three in the ranking since 2005. In its 17th anniversary, the program is jointly offered by the School of Business and Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) hosted Coursera’s second annual Asia Regional Workshop in Hong Kong. Around 180 representatives from major Asian universities joined the three-day event (15-17 October) for vibrant sessions about Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), online and blended pedagogy, and emerging trends in higher education. The Workshop was hosted by HKUST in collaboration with The University of Hong Kong, bringing together university officials, faculty members, instructional designers, program managers, technology specialists, and course staff from across Couresera’s partner organizations in the region. Coursera is the world’s largest open online education provider.

Big data, and the technology to mine information from it, is now one of the hottest terms in Information Technology. Multinationals, such as Intel, Google, and Alibaba, are pouring in large amount of resources into big data research every year, mining and analyzing the information, and then making adjustments to their corporate strategies accordingly.
