HKUST Students Receive Donation to Solve Healthcare Problems in Indonesia and Cambodia
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) received a donation from Equal Opportunities Foundation for the establishment of Student Innovation for Global Health Technology (SIGHT) Scholar Scheme, which enables undergraduates to work on their self-proposed healthcare projects in full time internship locally or overseas. Two teams consisted of six students were awarded this year.

An inclusive student initiative is building bonds and understanding between the myriad individuals who comprise HKUST
Be prepared to go beyond technology, timetables and tests if you talk with a member of “Humans of HKUST”.
The project, established and driven by students, conducts far-reaching interviews with a diverse range of HKUST-ers, exploring the culture, background, and personal experiences of individuals across the University’s globalized community. Quotes, moving anecdotes, and thought-provoking views are then shared through Facebook and compiled into an annual book of stories, distributed free on campus.

A Homecoming
A first generation graduate from HKUST, Professor Rachel Ngai went around the world, came back and contributed to where it all started.
Born in China and moved to Hong Kong as a six-year-old, Prof Rachel Ngai still remembers fondly how life was different in her adoptive homeland. “The first time I noticed the striking differences in the economies of different places was in high school,” Rachel remembers. “I was a tutor in Hong Kong and my salary was HK$100 an hour, so much higher than that of my father who was a pharmacist, earning HK$300 a month in China.”

Launch of 25th Anniversary Book “Prometheus in the Sky”
The title of the book Prometheus in the Sky is derived from Percy Bysshe Shelley’s idealist Prometheus Unbound, which conveys the morals of altruism, courage, innovation, and care for society. Prometheus was described as the one who tamed fire for humankind, generated curiosity in science, aroused study of medicine to save lives and gave humans language for better communication and knowledge. In celebrating the 25th anniversary of the University, the title echoes its core spirit as a science and technology university with a global vision and local commitment.

Sha Fei: A Humanist Photographer at War (1912-1950)
One of the most influential Chinese photographers of his generation, Sha Fei captured some of the most iconic images of wartime China from the late 1930s to the 1940s. His work reflects his deep humanism and his belief in the power of photography to awaken the people. Following his tragic execution in 1950, Sha Fei?s name was erased from history, only to be rediscovered in the 1980s.
