A group of physicists at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) led by Prof Shengwang Du reported the direct observation of optical precursor of a single photon and proved that single photons cannot travel faster than the speed of light in vacuum. HKUST's study reaffirms Einstein's theory that nothing travels faster than light and closes a decade-long debate about the speed of a single photon.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Value Partners Group Limited (SEHK: 806) jointly announce today the launch of the Value Partners Center for Investing at the HKUST Business School - the first academic center of its kind in Hong Kong to support research and training on investment management. The Value Partners Center for Investing aims to contribute to Hong Kong's role as a pre-eminent regional asset management center through promoting and supporting a wide range of activities in relation to investment research and training. The realization of the Center has been made possible through a generous donation from Value Partners Group Limited of close to HK$10 million. The Center will become fully operational in September 2011.

The School of Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the College of Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Korea, have reached an agreement for academic and research collaborations, under which the two institutions will establish a joint degree PhD program allowing students to conduct academic exchange at both universities. The 4-year program requires students to spend 2 years each at HKUST and POSTECH. Each student will be assigned two faculty advisors, one from each institution, based on their research interests. The advisors and their student will then develop an academic plan together, for approval by the department heads of both institutions, before the student commences his or her study. Graduates of the program will become alumni of both institutions. The first cohort of students is expected to be admitted in Fall 2012 at the earliest.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) School of Engineering and Princeton University School of Engineering and Applied Science have formed a partnership to launch a research-based undergraduate summer exchange program, which aims to provide engineering students with an international research experience of the highest standard, a global outlook, and an all-round education.

Heads of Hong Kong’s universities met tonight with Prof Andrew Hamilton, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University, to discuss broad global issues related to the undergraduate and graduate experience in Hong Kong, UK and USA. The meeting took place at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), hosted by HKUST President Tony F Chan, convener of Heads of Universities Committee (HUCOM) since 1 May 2010. The other heads of university present were City University of Hong Kong President Way Kuo, Hong Kong Baptist University Vice-President (Academic) Prof Franklin Luk, Hong Kong Institute of Education Vice-President (Administration) Mr Chris Mong, Lingnan University President Yuk-Shee Chan, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University President Timothy W Tong.

University of Oxford Vice-Chancellor Prof Andrew Hamilton and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) President Prof Tony F Chan today appeared in an historical forum to exchange ideas on the development of tertiary education in the UK and Hong Kong. The President Forum, presented by Oxford University Press, was attended by Ms Michelle Li, Deputy Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government, leading academics and over 100 school principals. Prof Hamilton and Prof Chan explored a broad range of issues, including the hallmarks of a world-class university, enrolment trends in UK and Hong Kong universities, and reforms in the tertiary education sector to nurture the new generation in various parts of the world.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) today (12 October 2009) announced a new program of collaborative research and postgraduate training in the humanities and social sciences to create innovative international and interdisciplinary connections among scholars and students researching topics related to China. The multi-year workshop and conference project program, to be organized by HKUST's School of Humanities and Social Science and UCLA's Asia Institute starting 2010, will form the foundation of broader networks of scholars at HKUST, UCLA and beyond who share related research interests. All HKUST and UCLA professorial faculty are eligible to apply and each project should be led by two Principal Investigators (PIs), one from each university.
