The inaugural "Four Seas Cup" Hong Kong International University Student WeiQi Competition was unveiled on HKUST campus. Hosted by the Hong Kong Greater Bay Area WeiQi Promotion Association, this tournament not only marks a milestone in Hong Kong's university WeiQi scene, but also serves a greater purpose of inspiring younger generations to learn and appreciate the ancient Chinese board game while promoting cultural exchange through sport.
The competition features 14 teams from countries including China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Brunei, as well as regions such as Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, and Macau. Over the course of two days, these teams will compete in a six-round event, receiving guidance from Chinese WeiQi Master Nie Weiping, World Champion of WeiQi Kong Jie, and other professional players.
The opening ceremony of the competition was graced by the presence of over 100 distinguished guests, including Mr. ZHANG Guoyi, Deputy Director of Department of Publicity, Culture and Sports Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Mr. Kevin YEUNG Yun-Hung, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism of the HKSAR Government; Prof. Nancy IP, President of HKUST; Dr. Stephen TAI, Chairman of Four Seas Group and Honorary President of the Hong Kong Greater Bay Area WeiQi Promotion Association; Mr. NEI Weiping, Chinese WeiQi Master; Ms. XU Ying, President of Hong Kong Greater Bay Area WeiQi Promotion Association; Mr. KONG Jie, World Champion of WeiQi.
The competition provides a platform for WeiQi players to showcase their skills, exchange knowledge, and forge friendships. It plays a vital role in promoting and advancing the game on a global level. HKUST is dedicated to providing a comprehensive education and supports the development of sports and cultural activities to enhance the learning experience for students.
