Following a HK$3 million donation from the Tin Ka Ping Foundation (Foundation) last year in support of the development of gifted education at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), HKUST received yet another donation of HK$5 million today from the Foundation for "Tin Ka Ping Education Fund" (the Fund) - a permanent fund for the University’s Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) to promote research development and exchange of young scholars between Hong Kong and the Mainland.
Set up in 2008, the Fund has sponsored six young and potential mainland scholars from Mainland China to assist IAS professors in research and teaching work. After the latest addition, the Fund’s principal will be amounted to HK$11 million.
Moreover, benefited from this donation, the University will also commission funding in support of the "Dream Chaser Scholarship Fund" - initiated by HKUST students last year for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The new fund is named "Tin Ka Ping Dream Chaser Scholarships", with an aim to assist students in financial or study needs to overcome obstacles, broaden their exposure and chase dreams.
Today’s donation ceremony was officiated by Mr. TIN Hing-Sin, Chairman of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation Board; Mr. TIN Wing-Sin, Director of the Foundation’s Board; Prof. Wei SHYY, HKUST President; Prof. Lionel NI, HKUST Provost; Mr. Mark HODGSON, Vice-President for Administration and Business of HKUST; Prof. Nancy IP, Vice-President for Research and Development of HKUST; Prof. Sabrina LIN, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement of HKUST; Prof. Andrew COHEN, IAS Director; Prof. King CHOW, Director of HKUST Interdisciplinary Programs Office and Acting Dean of Students.
Chairman of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation Mr. Tin Hing-Sin said, “As a world-acclaimed university, HKUST has been attaining outstanding achievements in teaching and research over the years. The Foundation has been supporting HKUST’s academic exchange in Greater China since 2002, nurturing distinguished young scholars and promoting Chinese writing. Their exquisite works are not only encouraging but also give the Foundation more confidence to commit further to the Education Fund. The government’s matching grant scheme would further amplify the impact of our donation and set to benefit more teachers and students.”
HKUST President Prof. Wei Shyy expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Foundation. “Dr. TIN Ka-Ping was a great and well-respected philanthropist. He devoted his life and wealth to setting up the Foundation, and living his motto to promote education and moral development. The Foundation’s continual and generous support to HKUST is a recognition of our efforts and achievements. I am sure this donation would help foster whole-person development for students – especially those in need, and help attract more excellent young scholars to our university, further expanding the realms of academic and knowledge frontiers. ”
The Tin Ka Ping Foundation was established by the late Dr. Tin Ka-Ping in 1982. Over the years, the Foundation has made generous donations to HKUST in support of endeavors including those on research and teaching. These initiatives not only helped the University promote young researchers (three of whom have since become assistant professors at HKUST), bring world-class scholars to the campus and host international games such as the annual Asian Physics Olympiad, but also funded the University’s gifted education and Chinese creative writing programs, as well as under-privileged primary school students to attend HKUST’s Kids@UST Science and Mathematics workshops. HKUST named its center hall after the late Dr. Tin in appreciation to his selfless contribution to education and society.
