HKUST President Prof. Nancy IP Honored by University of Strathclyde for Groundbreaking Contributions to Science and Education
Prof. Nancy IP, President and The Morningside Professor of Life Science at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), was conferred an Honorary Doctoral Degree by the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, in recognition of her extraordinary achievements as a world-renowned neuroscientist, a visionary educator and university leader, and a prominent trailblazer in global science policy.
A Legacy of Breakthroughs and Leadership
The conferment ceremony was held at the University of Strathclyde's magnificent Barony Hall, presided over by Prof. Stephen MCARTHUR, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University. When presenting Prof. Ip, the honorary doctorate, Prof. Duncan GRAHAM, Associate Principal and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, acclaimed her multifaceted impact, from her seminal laboratory breakthroughs and strategic leadership of a world-class university to her international influence on science policy.
He highlighted Prof. Ip’s groundbreaking research on neurotrophic factors and Alzheimer's disease that has led to new therapeutic strategies, and the creation of a biobank for Chinese Alzheimer's patients, heralding it as a vital bridge between the lab bench and bedside. He also lauded her for her dedication to nurturing generations of scientists and for her historic role as the first woman to lead a publicly funded university in Hong Kong. He further emphasized her stature as a global leader in science, whose counsel is sought by major international forums and research organizations, underscoring her significant role in advancing brain science worldwide.
Celebrating Shared Values and Inspiring Futures
In her acceptance speech, Prof. Ip expressed her heartfelt gratitude and highlighted the profound connection between the two institutions. “It is truly an honor to be recognized by such an esteemed institution. The University of Strathclyde’s legacy spans over three centuries, while HKUST was established just 34 years ago, yet we share the same values, mission, and vision for higher education. Our strong alliance, forged since 2015, pushes the boundaries of knowledge and fosters innovation. Together, we have created a powerful bridge between Glasgow and Hong Kong.”
Prof. Ip also inspired the graduates by weaving her personal journey of perseverance together with the story of HKUST's rise. “Since its founding, the entire HKUST community has worked tirelessly to build our reputation through a ‘can-do’ spirit, pouring our passion into academic excellence and strategic partnerships to make a meaningful impact. Today, HKUST stands as a world-renowned university where our faculty, students, and alumni are making a real difference through groundbreaking discoveries and impactful initiatives.” She encouraged the graduates to embrace their own "can-do" spirit as they embark on their journeys.
