The Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) opened its office and laboratories at the Hong Kong Science Park today (Friday, 15 January 2010), to cater for the Institute’s expanding operations.
HKUST President Tony F Chan said, “As part of HKUST’s continued commitment to contributing to Hong Kong’s economic development, NAMI will develop innovative products and manufacturing processes, from product conceptualization to market, in the areas of nanotechnology and advanced materials.”
NAMI is a fully-owned subsidiary of HKUST. It has been conducting market-driven, industry-led research and development with funding from the Innovation and Technology Commission and industry since April 2006.
“NAMI’s presence in the Hong Kong Science Park signifies a step closer to industry and the community. We will collaborate with professionals at the Science Park to work with entrepreneurs and industrialists both within the Park and outside, on developing innovative products and processes,” President Chan said at the opening ceremony.
NAMI Chief Executive Officer Prof Ka-Ming Ng said, “With world class universities as the technology platform, Hong Kong has rapidly reaffirmed its competitive edge in the research and development of nano and advanced materials. HKUST’s successful development of the world’s thinnest nanotube is a good example. If this nanotechnology is further commercialized, it will certainly benefit Hong Kong, Mainland China and even the global economy.”
“Products made with nanotechnology now include metal products, electronics, textiles, display units, foods, jewelry, personal hygiene and healthcare products, as well as energy and environmental products,” said Prof Ng, who is also a Chair Professor in HKUST’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.
The ceremony was officiated also by Miss Janet Wong, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Mr Nicholas Brooke, Chairman, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, and the top management of NAMI.
