A Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has become one of only five fellows of the Institute of Industrial Engineers in the Greater China Region.
Prof Fugee Tsung, Head of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management (IELM) at HKUST, has received the IIE Fellow 2010 Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) – the highest honor bestowed by the organization in recognition of his significant contributions in the field of industrial engineering.
Prof. Tsung said, “Before 2000, only five universities in China have established Industrial Engineering (IE) programs. But now, in 2010, over 180 universities in China have IE departments. I am delighted to see that IE is gaining increasing recognition in this region in recent years.”
Founded in 1948, IIE is the world’s largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. IIE is an international, nonprofit association that provides leadership in the application, education, training, research, and development of various aspects of industrial engineering, including healthcare, service operations, manufacturing and logistics, ergonomics, and lean and Six Sigma professionals.
Prof Tsung received both his master’s and doctorate degrees in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan and his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from National Taiwan University. He joined HKUST in 1997 and is now Professor and Head of the IELM Department at HKUST.
Prof Tsung is also an elected Fellow of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and Fellow of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). He was elected Regional Vice President (Asia) of IIE in 2008 and served as Associate Editor of Technometrics and Department Editor of IIE Transactions. So far, he has served in editorial positions for 13 internationally respected journals.
IIE will present the Fellow Award at the Industrial Engineering Research Conference to be held in Cancun, Mexico, from 5 to 9 June 2010.
