Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) President Tony F Chan has recently been selected as Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), one of the world’s leading institutions in the field of mathematics.
President Chan was made a SIAM Fellow for his “contributions to numerical analysis and image processing, and for service to the mathematical community.” He joins some 30 top mathematicians in the Class of 2010, and is one of only two ethnic Chinese to be thus honored this year. President Chan is also the only SIAM Fellow representing a tertiary institution in Hong Kong.
SIAM was incorporated in 1952 and now has over 13,000 individual members worldwide and about 500 institutional members in the fields of education, research and development, manufacturing, service, consulting, military endeavor, and government.
The mission of SIAM is to build cooperation between mathematics and the worlds of science and technology through publication, research and community activities.
“I feel greatly honored and privileged to be selected as a SIAM Fellow,” said President Chan. “I look forward to further facilitating communication and cooperation between academia and industry in the international arena. This ties in very well with one of HKUST’s objectives – to collaborate closely with business and industry in promoting technological innovation and economic development.”
President Tony Chan joined HKUST in September last year. Prior to this, he was Assistant Director of the US National Science Foundation in charge of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate – the largest directorate at the Foundation. In this position, he guided and managed research funding of about HK$10 billion a year in astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematical science, material science, and multidisciplinary activities.
President Chan received his BS and MS degrees in Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University.
His current research interests include mathematical image processing and computer vision, Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) physical design and computational brain mapping. He has published over 200 refereed papers and is one of the world’s most cited mathematicians. He has mentored 25 PhD students and 15 postdoctoral fellows.
