The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) President Designate Prof Tony Chan was today (28 August 2009) appointed Honorary Professor by Xian Jiaotong University.
After the appointment ceremony, Prof Chan gave a talk entitled “Image Processing – a New Frontier for Applied Mathematics”.
Prof Chan will become President of HKUST on Tuesday, 1 September 2009, succeeding out-going President Paul Chu who has headed HKUST for the past 8 years.
Prior to assuming HKUST presidency, Prof Chan was Assistant Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in charge of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate, the largest directorate at NSF, guiding and managing research funding of about HK$10 billion a year in astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematical science, material science and multidisciplinary activities. Prof Chan had also been Dean of Physical Sciences at University of California at Los Angeles.
Prof Chan received his primary and secondary education in Hong Kong, before furthering his studies in the US. He received his BS and MS degrees in Engineering from the California Institute of Technology and his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University.
