HKUST Celebrates Commencement of Construction on Business Building and Institute of Advanced Study

2010-05-17

A significant milestone was laid in the history of campus development at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today, with the commencement of construction for the Lee Shau Kee Campus, which comprises the Business Building and the Institute for Advanced Study.

HKUST President Tony F Chan, together with faculty and staff of the Business School, Institute for Advanced Study and other related departments, attended the Ceremony organized by the contractor China State Construction International Holdings Ltd.

In his speech at the Ceremony, President Chan said, “All of us at HKUST are now busy preparing for the 3-3-4 transition in 2012, both in terms of hardware and software. While we are in the process of recruiting stellar faculty and enhancing our student admission capabilities, I am glad that the preparation of our hardware is in good hands.”

“Upon completion of the Business Building by 2012, HKUST will be able to serve considerably more students with newer and better facilities. Meanwhile, the Institute for Advanced Study will further enhance HKUST’s global standing as a haven for the world’s top minds,” he added.

President Chan also commended China State Construction’s contributions to Hong Kong. Over 400,000 people in Hong Kong, or 1 in every 15 people, are now living in housing built by this company, he said.

Mr Zhou Yong, Vice-Chairman and CEO of China State Construction, said, “Our company shares the same vision with HKUST – to contribute to the growing prosperity of Hong Kong and Mainland China by nurturing talent and developing science and technology.”

Occupying an area of about 10 hectares, or 15% of the total area of the HKUST main campus, the Lee Shau Kee Campus is situated on the highest part of the HKUST campus. It is a key infrastructural component in HKUST’s preparation for the introduction of the 4-year curriculum in Fall 2012.
