The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today (Friday) conferred Honorary Fellowships on five distinguished leaders in recognition of their contributions.
The five recipients of the 2009 Honorary Fellowships are: Mr Paul Chow Man-Yiu, Mr Tim Lui Tim-Leung, Mr E Anthony Tan, Prof Andrew G Walder and Mr Peter Wong Kwok-Keung.
HKUST Pro-Chancellor Dr the Honorable Sir Sze-Yuen Chung, Council Chairman Dr the Honorable Marvin Cheung, and President Paul Chu officiated at the conferment ceremony. The five recipients’ brief biographies are set out below:
Mr Paul Chow Man-Yiu, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, successfully led the stock exchange to build its infrastructure, developed core efficiency and introduced many products and services such as the Central Clearing and Settlement System and the Automatic Order Matching and Execution System. Mr Chow has been a member of the Board of Directors of the World Federation of Exchanges and was appointed Chairman of its Working Committee in 2006. Currently, he is Vice Chairman of the Board. He was recently appointed a Court member of HKUST. He has also been Chairman of the Hong Kong Investment Funds Association and a member of the Standing Committee on Company Law Reform.
Mr Tim Lui Tim-Leung, Certified Public Accountant and Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, was past President of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Chairman of the Institute’s Taxation Committee for 12 years. Mr Lui has a diversified portfolio of public service even outside his professional discipline, including Chairman of the Education Appeals Board, Member of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Chairman of the Standing Commission on Directorate Salaries and Conditions of Service, and Member of University Grants Committee. He has been a Council Member of HKUST for many years and served as its Treasurer for six years.
Mr E Anthony Tan, Chief Executive Officer of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), has 33 years of experience in corporate senior management before assuming this current post. He was President of DuPont China Limited and Corporate Services Director of the Hong Kong Airport Authority before joining HKSTP. With an aim to educating the community about science and technology, HKSTP has launched an Open to the Tech Public Program, welcoming thousands of school children and community members to its displays of technological innovations. Under Mr Tan’s nurturing, more than 200 start-ups companies have been successfully incubated, four of which are now listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
Prof Andrew G Walder, Denise O’Leary and Kent Thiry Professor of Sociology at Stanford University, is regarded as one of the world’s top three sociologists in the study of contemporary Chinese politics and economy. He has served as Associate Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Science of HKUST, rendering solid support for introducing social science as a new major in undergraduate education under the new 3-3-4 education system.
Mr Peter Wong Kwok-Keung is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Kum Shing Group. Under his leadership, Kum Shing has become a revered name and a major player in civil engineering circles, in the construction of roads, bridges, drains, power generation systems, public buildings and in utility maintenance service. Mr Wong is devoted to education, having built 108 schools for the impoverished children in some of the remotest areas in China. He donated to charity in his father’s name via the “Kum Shing K.F. Wong Education and Charity Trust”. Among the many projects he supported is a hospital in his native Dongguan and the Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Primary and Secondary School. Mr Wong is also an active member of HKUST’s Civil Engineering Advisory Board.
