Caring for Our People
Our people are our most important asset, which is why we are continually innovating our approaches to attracting, upskilling, and retaining talent while celebrating their accomplishments.
We embrace the idea “excellence attracts excellence”, fostering a dynamic and vibrant environment where exceptional talents can truly thrive. We believe our talents will shape the future of HKUST, contribute to the academic community, and make a positive impact on society.

Investing in Staff Development
We promote an environment that cultivates development, self-discovery, and lifelong learning. Through our in-house staff development training scheme and staff development sponsorship, we nurture our people to achieve their full potential and to prepare them for career progression. For our members charged with teaching our next generation, the Center for Education Innovation continuously tests and deploys the latest innovations and teaching methods to support them to advance student learning.

Fostering a Modern and Productive Workplace
Our flexible work policy allows eligible employees to work from an alternative location in Hong Kong one day per week, supporting staff well-being while fostering trust, collaboration, creativity, and productivity among teams.

Community Building Through Volunteering
We provide four days of special paid leave to allow staff to serve the community through volunteering, strengthening their sense of belonging within our community, and promoting staff wellness. Staff can also use this leave to participate in diversity and equal opportunities initiatives organized by HKUST.

Ensuring a Positive Workplace for All
We are dedicated to fostering and safeguarding a positive workplace culture that provides equal opportunities for all. To achieve this, we frequently organize trainings and workshops to equip our members with essential skills and knowledge covering inclusion, corruption prevention, anti-discrimination, and more. We also have thorough procedures to address staff grievances and issues related to discrimination and harassment, designed to handle concerns in an impartial and timely manner.

Recognizing Contributions
Established in 2010, the annual HKUST Long Service Awards recognizes and celebrates the dedication of colleagues who have contributed to the institution for two, or even three decades. These awards not only acknowledge their loyalty and hard work, but also foster a sense of belonging and commitment within our community, helping inspire others to emulate their diligence, resilience, and can-do spirit.

Forging a Supportive Community
Recognizing the need for extra support during times of difficulty, all employees and their immediate families are provided with access to counseling through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). This offers assistance in personal growth, mental health, stress management, and financial counseling.

Living Wage Across the Campus
We are committed to ensuring our campus is a healthy and thriving environment, not just for our students, faculty and staff, but also for the dedicated service providers who provide daily care for our community. That’s why we guarantee that all contractors serving on our campus receive at least a living wage, which is higher than the statutory minimum wage. This ensures all living expenses can be covered without relying on external assistance.
