For generations of alumni, HKUST is where the relentless “can-do spirit” was born. That same ethos came alive once again when nearly 400 alumni returned with their children for a special camp, eager to introduce their alma mater to the next generation.
Welcoming alumni and their families back to the campus, Prof. TAM Kar-Yan, Vice-President for Business and Administration, highlighted the University's remarkable transformation over the past 35 years into a world-class research-intensive university.
But even as the campus continues to evolve, from building new research facilities and student residences to expanding teaching and recreational spaces, HKUST will always be a home for its alumni and their families.
“Holding this summer camp on the occasion of our 35th anniversary is especially meaningful,” said Prof. Tam. “We hope not only to provide a platform for alumni to reconnect and rekindle their friendships, but also to pass on HKUST’s ‘can-do spirit’ of pursuing excellence and continuous innovation from generation to generation."
A highlight of the camp was a fireside chat featuring HKUST President Prof. Nancy IP and Mr. Terry TSANG, HKUST Council Member and HKUST Convocation Chairman, who initiated and sponsored the summer camp.
Reflecting on their personal journeys here, they discussed the values that have fostered their deep and lasting connection with HKUST, including the culture of collaboration, mutual support, and innovation. President Ip also shared insights into HKUST’s latest developments, including groundbreaking advances in Alzheimer's disease research and the University’s efforts to establish the new School of Medicine.
Mr. Tsang pointed out that registration for the inaugural camp was fully subscribed within the first hour of opening, reflecting the overwhelming response it received.
The action-packed summer camp offered inspiring talks on cutting-edge topics ranging from AI and space science to digital finance. There were also dedicated sessions on healthy living and parenting that equipped families with practical knowledge to strengthen parent-child relationships.
For these young trailblazers, the experience provided an exciting introduction to the HKUST spirit of exploration and innovation. They had the chance to attend hands-on STEAM and AI workshops, explored interactive campus tours, and enjoy encounters fascinating animals. Parents and children also took part in collaborative challenges, yoga sessions, and an evening of delicious food and live music at the campus cafeteria.
Throughout the weekend, the campus was filled with warm smiles, joyful reunions, and the laughter of children. More than a journey down memory lane, the HKUST Pioneers Summer Camp has already planted the seeds of innovation and discovery in the next generation.
