Opening of HKUST Shanghai Center in Xuhui District
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) celebrates the opening of the HKUST Shanghai Center today at the Shanghai AI Tower in the West Bund of the Xuhui District in collaboration with the District’s Government, and the Caohejing Hi-Tech Park Development Corporation. Leveraging its strengths in chips, artificial intelligence and biomedicine, the Center is set to enhance collaboration on innovation and entrepreneurship between Hong Kong and Shanghai.

HKUST Signs Strategic Cooperation Agreement with Guangzhou Municipal Government
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government, following their partnership to establish HKUST(Guangzhou), have signed a comprehensive strategic agreement today. This agreement will facilitate in-depth collaboration in three key areas:  industry-academia-research integration, life sciences research and medical innovation, and training of innovative talents. Both parties will establish a long-term exchange mechanism to jointly promote sustainable economic growth, new industrialization, and the development of new productive forces.

HKUST Develops World’s Smallest Multifunctional Biomedical Robot for Interventional Diagnosis and Treatment
Researchers from the School of Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) have successfully developed the world’s smallest multifunctional biomedical robot, which is 60% smaller than current models. Capable of imaging, high-precision motion, and multifunctional operations like sampling, drug delivery, and laser ablation, the robot offers competitive imaging performance and a tenfold improvement in obstacle detection, paving the way for robotic applications in narrow and challenging channels of the human body, such as the lung’s end bronchi and the oviducts.

HKUST Secures $30 Million Grant to Develop AI-Powered English Learning System
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced the launch of a pioneering education technology initiative aimed at revolutionizing English education for secondary school students in Hong Kong during the Opening Ceremony of Learning League 2025. With over HK$30 million in funding from the Quality Education Fund (QEF), the three-year initiative will develop an advanced AI-powered English assessment and learning system, offering free access to all secondary school students in Hong Kong. The project, jointly initiated by HKUST Center for Language Education, HKUST Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies, and Trumptech, a leading education technology company in Hong Kong, addresses two critical goals: promoting “education equity” by supporting students from diverse backgrounds and abilities, and fostering “education equality” by providing every school with equal access to affordable professional English learning resources.

HKUST Launches Low Altitude Economy Research Center
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced today the launch of its Low Altitude Economy Research Center (LAERC), a strategic initiative designated to bolster national and HKSAR government’s development plans for the Low Altitude Economy (LAE). Emphasizing highly interdisciplinary approach, the Center integrates expertise in artificial intelligence, engineering, and business to foster the development of a LAE ecosystem, with a vision to translate research into pioneering applications through public-private-academic collaboration. Recently, the LAERC submitted a proposal for building LAE sandbox to the HKSAR government and is ready to collaborate with strategic industry partners on innovative trial tests within this framework.

HKUST Signs Framework Agreement with CSU.CAS
A delegation from the Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CSU.CAS), responsible for China's manned space research and application projects, visited the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today. During the visit, they met with the university's senior management and faculty, culminating in the signing of a framework agreement designed to enhance collaboration in five critical areas: establishing a joint laboratory, promoting research partnerships, co-sharing research facilities and systems, facilitating talent development, and fostering international cooperation. By combining their respective strengths and resources, the agreement seeks to jointly advance research and technology in aerospace engineering, contributing to the nation's space endeavors.
