The Architect of New Materials: Let There Be Better Solar Cells
For many, remaining within the familiar confines of our expertise, or let’s say comfort zone, is the norm, even momentous goals have been achieved. But it is not the case for Professor ZHOU Yuanyuan. He refuses to rest on his laurels and is working hard to expand his research scope. In the face of the challenges of commercializing the promising solar technology, he is never a quitter.In his newly rebuilt laboratory on the HKUST campus, Prof. Zhou, Associate Professor of HKUST’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, who joined the University under the prestigious “30 for 30” talent acquisition campaign, has been leading his team to research new materials, making steady strides towards his goal of popularizing the use of sustainable energy in our daily life.

HKUST Kicks off for the first Cross Campus Art-tech Exhibition
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held the opening of the exhibition “Altering Nature: Exploring Life in Computational Art” on 30 Oct 2024, which is the first art-tech exhibition in collaboration with Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) of HKUST and HKUST (GZ). HKUST Dean of AIS Prof. QU Huamin said, “The University owns our students some art education and Art Tech integrates different components of the University, making it a platform for showcasing the artworks of students and artists.” He expressed hopes that this exhibition would become an annual event, fostering ongoing collaboration between the Hong Kong and Guangzhou campuses.

Croucher Foundation Presents Senior Research Fellowships 2025 to Three Distinguished Scholars
Croucher Foundation held its Foundation Day Dinner and Awards Presentation Ceremony on 6 December to present the Croucher Senior Research Fellowships 2025 to three distinguished scholars from City University of Hong Kong (CityU), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU), for their outstanding scientific research achievements. From Quips to Chips: Dr. Jensen Huang Spots the World of AI
New technology, like artificial intelligence (AI), has shaken the world. Chances are the insights from today’s great minds will steer us towards a right path.The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) conferred an Honorary Doctor of Engineering honoris causa on Dr. Jensen HUANG, the founder and CEO of NVIDIA. As a newly welcomed member of the HKUST community, he joined Prof. Harry SHUM, Council Chairman of HKUST and a celebrated computer scientist, for a fireside chat on November 23, 2024. Together, the technological experts explored critical issues surrounding “Technology, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship”.The hundreds of participants in the auditorium were mesmerized, not just by the speakers’ stylish leather jackets emblazoned with “HKUST”, but also by Dr. Huang’s dynamic presence and the wise words from the two experts on stage.

HKUST and CMA Form Strategic Partnership to Advance Meteorological Research and Global Climate Resilience
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have signed a collaborative framework agreement to drive innovation in meteorological science and education. By leveraging the complementary strengths of CMA and HKUST, the collaboration aims to enhance early warning systems, strengthen disaster preparedness, and build climate-resilient communities, underscoring the shared commitment of both institutions to tackle global climate challenges and support the initiatives of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The Inaugural International Forum on Interdisciplinary Education Connects University Leaders to Foster Collaboration across Disciplines
The Inaugural International Forum on Interdisciplinary Education (the Forum), organized by the Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), was successfully held on November 16, 2024 on the Clear Water Bay campus. The Forum brought together university leaders from around the globe to exchange innovative practices in interdisciplinary education and foster collaboration across diverse fields of study.

HKUST Celebrates Emirati Culture and Ongoing Partnership at UAE National Day Event
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) warmly welcomed H.E. Shaikh SAOUD ALI AL MUALLA, the Consul General of the UAE in Hong Kong, to a cultural event celebrating the 53rd Eid Al Etihad (also known as the UAE Union Day) on November 28 at the HKUST campus.  Organized by the university's Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions Office in collaboration with the UAE student community and generously supported by the Consulate General of the UAE in Hong Kong, the event showcased traditional Emirati costumes, authentic dishes, and a photo exhibition featuring the iconic monuments of the UAE, bringing the spirit of the Emirati culture to the HKUST campus.
