Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) is pleased to announce today (September 12) the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and a consortium of French companies, including Schneider Electric, Veolia, Bouygues-Dragages, Egis, and Saint-Gobain. This partnership will launch a pioneering low carbon retrofit pilot project, marking a pivotal step toward achieving Hong Kong's carbon neutrality goal by 2050, a goal shared by France.  This MOU stems from the Team France Green Paper on collaboration opportunities to accelerate Hong Kong's path to carbon neutrality by 2050 published in April 2024. This was followed by work on a pilot project proposal for a net zero-carbon building, which was shared with the Chief Executive, Mr. John LEE.

A research team from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), led by Professors Gan Jianping (Department of Ocean Science) and Professor Yang Can (Department of Mathematics), has developed a novel AI-powered tool named STIMP for diagnosing coastal ocean productivity and ecosystem health. STIMP introduces a novel paradigm that imputes missing data and then predicts Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations across large spatiotemporal scales. In tests across four representative global coastal regions, STIMP significantly outperformed existing geoscience tools, reducing the mean absolute error (MAE) for imputation by up to 81.39% and for prediction by 58.99%. Accurate Chl-a prediction aids in early detection of harmful algal blooms, ecosystem protection, and provides data-driven insights for evidence-based policy-making.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Sino Group today announced the official launch of the finals for the 15th HKUST-SINO One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition. This milestone anniversary features a record-breaking 348 teams from Hong Kong and 22 other countries and regions across five continents, including Australia, the United States, South Africa, the United Kingdom, Japan, India and Kazakhstan, showcasing the competition’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovative talents and promote collaboration and idea exchanges between local and international entrepreneurs.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology today announced its School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) and Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business (NUGSB) in Kazakhstan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to offer a joint Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program in Eurasian business. This pioneering partnership program, the first of its kind in Asia, was officially launched at the 10th Belt and Road Summit, highlighting a shared commitment to advancing higher education cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

A research team led by Prof. PAN Ding, Associate Professor from the Departments of Physics and Chemistry, and Dr. LI Shuo-Hui, Research Assistant Professor from the Department of Physics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has developed a novel direct sampling method based on deep generative models. This method enables efficient sampling of the Boltzmann distribution across a continuous temperature range. The findings have been published in Physical Review Letters*.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today unveiled a display case featuring a signed leather jacket gifted by its esteemed alumnus Dr. Jensen HUANG, the Founder and CEO of NVIDIA.  The event also marked the formal establishment of the HKUST Top Engineering Scholars Award, made possible by generous donation from Dr. Huang and Mr. Terry TSANG Kin-Chung, an HKUST Council Member and fellow engineering alumnus.

The "Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou" cluster has been ranked the 1st largest innovation cluster in the Global Innovation Index 2025 top 100 ranking, ascending from its previous position and marking a historic achievement. This rise to the top is underscored by exceptional performance metrics, with the cluster filing 2,292 Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications, publishing 3,775 scientific articles, and securing 135 venture capital deals—all per 1 million inhabitants over the past five years. This data reflects the cluster’s unparalleled growth and dynamic capacity for world-leading innovation.

香港科技大學（科大）今日（九月一日）舉辦開學嘉年華「Fire Up Your Year」，校長葉玉如教授聯同一眾管理層、教職員和校友，與學生一同獻唱校歌，又大玩互動問答遊戲兼送上豐富禮品，與新生及從各地回來上課的莘莘學子，喜迎新學年。其中，校董會成員兼大學評議會主席曾建中先生更在科大校友攤位前，向同學派發雪糕，在新學年伊始添上一絲甜意。 科大上周五亦為本學年秋季學期迎來了破紀錄的逾550名國際交換生，舉辦了一系列迎新活動和校園導覽，加深他們對科大的認識。這些國際交換生當中，有超過六成同學來自歐洲，其餘分別來自亞洲、美洲和大洋洲的國家或地區。 葉玉如校長於開學日致辭中，熱烈歡迎新一屆加入的同學，並勉勵所有學生、教職員和校友繼續秉持科大「凡事皆可為」的核心價值，勇於探索。她說：「新學年充滿著無限可能，我鼓勵大家抱持好奇心與實幹精神，專注學習之餘，亦走訪校園的不同角落，發掘自己的興趣，體驗非凡的機遇，勇於智闖，並結識能相隨一生的良師摯友。」 葉校長又指，同學在成長過程中難免會遇到挑戰，鼓勵大家把每個障礙視為讓自己成長的機會。她感謝眾多校友專程返回母校，在開學日為新生打氣；她更勉勵同學按自己的步伐成長，科大社群將成為他們堅實的後盾。 主辦開學嘉年華的環球事務及傳訊處和學務長辦公室亦邀請了一眾科大同學，呈獻無伴奏合唱及跳舞表演，並於校園設置攤位，與眾同樂。
