HKUST Becomes the First University in Asia-Pacific Associated with EY Tax Lab
[HONG KONG, May 27 2020] The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) today announces a collaborative partnership with EY’s Advanced Technology Tax Lab (“Tax Lab”). This unique collaboration brings together experts in data science, machine learning and business research, as well as a global leader in professional services, to solve complex tax issues through the use and application of advanced technologies. The agreement between HKUST and EY will establish a platform for joint research and technology development opportunities of mutual interest relating to the application of emerging technology to practical tax scenarios, thereby facilitating collaborations between the two organizations. This will include practical tax technology case study projects, speaking opportunities for HKUST academic staff and EY partners, and internship and graduate employment opportunities for students.

HKUST Co-led Study Suggests Universal Face Mask Wearing is Urgent Against Second Wave of COVID-19 Outbreak as Social Distancing Lifts
As governments worldwide are planning to gradually ease lockdown or social distancing measures after months of life disruptions due to COVID-19, an interdisciplinary study co-convened by a Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) computer scientist has recently found that universal face mask wearing is an urgent non-pharmaceutical intervention to suppress the spread or second waves of the disease before effective vaccines or treatments are available.

HKUST Scientists Shed Light on COVID-19 Vaccine Development
A team of scientists at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has recently identified a set of potential vaccine targets which could be helpful for the development of a vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus – the cause of a novel pneumonia (COVID-19) outbreak which has spread to over 30 countries to date, infecting over 80,000 people and claimed over 2,600 lives*.

HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2018 Sees Innovative Entrepreneurial Ideas
Three teams comprising HKUST students, alumni and their international peers have won over 100 contesting teams to gain the top three prizes of the HKUST-Sino One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition 2018. They will compete with the finalists from six different cities in the Grand Final to be held at the University’s Fok Ying Tung Research Institute, Nansha in August.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) expanded its eighth annual One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition to two more cities in China, making the total number of cities holding this competition to seven. Meanwhile, HKUST will introduce new initiatives for its one million dollar entrepreneurship competition in Hong Kong this year, in a bid to enhance diversity and experience of the participants, as well as facilitating public engagement in this contest.

From Gymnastics to Neuroscience, Veronika Cencen is leaping from strength to strength.
Bio-engineering PhD student Veronika Cencen’s upbringing, hobbies and interests have seen her go from growing up in Beijing, and Slovenia, to studying at Princeton and The University of Ottawa, and performing gymnastics in Slovenian national team at the World University Games in 2013.
HKUST’s international outlook and reputation makes the next logical stop, where Veronika gets to conduct ground-breaking research and unravel the mysteries of the mind. Veronika chose HKUST for its research and faculty strength, top notch Nanosystem Fabrication Facility, and the fact her supervisor has strong co-operative links with Cambridge University. “HKUST is bursting with its youthful energy, enthusiasm, acceptance, and encouragement of diverse interests,” Veronika says.
