The Robo-Advisory Firm Incubated in a Library
Don and Kelvin co-founded AQUMON in 2015 with the vision of democratizing financial services.
In 2015, when Dr. Don HUANG was still teaching financial engineering at HKUST, he received a call from his former bank colleague Kelvin LEI, asking whether he would be interested in starting a business with him. The answer was an instant “Yes!”
“Kelvin told me his vision of democratizing wealth management so that more people could enjoy better services. It wasn’t easy for the algorithms and financial modeling involved, but I immediately felt it was a great opportunity,” says the HKUST alumnus.

Building a Tech Talent Pool
Unlike big tech corporations, tech SMEs or start-ups usually do not have dedicated resources to hire interns who are enthusiastic about innovation and technology. Yet, internships at big tech firms are highly competitive. To help bridge this gap, HKUST has joined the Hong Kong government’s STEM Internship Scheme, through which more than 300 HKUST students have secured internships -- the highest among all universities taking part.
The Scheme, offered by the Innovation and Technology Commission to students from UGC-funded universities, aims to foster students’ interest in pursuing a career in IT after graduation to enlarge the local IT talent pool in the long run.

HKUST Business School Stands Out on Gender Balance Performance
The School of Business and Management of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) has performed well on its gender balance among the world’s top 20 business schools, according to an analysis by 20-FIRST.
20-FIRST is one of the world’s leading global consultancy firms with a focus on promoting gender balance and organizational effectiveness. The firm believes that business schools are a key lever in the ability of companies to gender balance and their faculty members affect the mindsets of graduates when they join the business world. Of the top 20 business schools accessed, the HKUST Business School scored the highest percentage of female faculty (30% Female / 70% Male), ahead of Harvard Business School and Yale School of Management.

HKUST and Microsoft Introduce First AI-Centric MBA Elective in Hong Kong
November 1, 2019, Hong Kong –– Microsoft Hong Kong and The School of Business and Management of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) introduced today Hong Kong’s first MBA elective featuring an AI (Artificial Intelligence) curriculum. The enhanced curriculum will equip business leaders and organizations with the critical skills, knowledge and culture to succeed in the 4th Industrial Revolution.Officially available for MBA students of HKUST Business School in early 2020, the AI curriculum is part of Microsoft’s Global AI Business School initiative, designed in partnership with INSEAD and provides the latest thinking on AI transformation in business. Business leaders from local enterprises and organizations can also access the AI curriculum by joining the open executive education program provided by HKUST soon to get ready for the AI future.
