Fiona Cheung Scholarship to Empower Future AI Talent
A generous donation from one of Hong Kong’s leading entrepreneurs marks the first scholarship specifically designated for HKUST’s Major + AI program, reinforcing the University’s mission to nurture talent with an interdisciplinary mindset and the ability to integrate AI across disciplines to solve real-world challenges.The visionary gift from Ms. Fiona CHEUNG, Chairman of Forest Zone Limited, will establish the “Fiona Cheung Scholarship”, to support high-achieving local students pursuing the Extended Major in Artificial Intelligence (Major + AI) program.A highly accomplished entrepreneur with diverse business interests, Ms. Cheung is profoundly committed to philanthropic ventures and education. Her distinguished track record of community contributions includes leadership roles at Po Leung Kuk and Yan Oi Tong.

Boundless: Thanks for your time, Prof. Yang. Was this the first time the International Conference on Adaptive Structures and Technologies, or ICAST, has been held at HKUST?Prof. Yang: Yes, this is HKUST’s first time hosting ICAST. It is a highly regarded series that began in 1990 as a US–Japan collaboration in Maui, Hawaii. Over the past three decades, ICAST has been hosted across North America, Asia, and Europe. We were delighted to host the 35th edition of this series at HKUST.Boundless:  What are HKUST’s strengths in adaptive structures and technologies?

Laying a New Cornerstone in Quantum Physics
Prof. LAW Kam-Tuen, Chair Professor of the Department of Physics and the Director of Research Office at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has been named "New Cornerstone Investigator" by the Tencent-funded New Cornerstone Science Foundation for his extraordinary achievements in quantum physics.He has been endowed with funding to establish a New Cornerstone Science Laboratory, inaugurated on May 28. The award - up to RMB 15 million over five years from the New Cornerstone Science Foundation - will support Prof. Law and his team's research in quantum physics. He is the second HKUST researcher to receive this prestigious title, following Prof. Xi DAI, Chair Professor of the Department of Physics, who was awarded in 2023.

‘Sze Chi Ching and Wu Shu Min Learning Space’ named in honor of the Dr. Sze family
In a tribute to Dr. SZE Chi-Ching and his family’s generous gift, and in recognition of the family’s support, HKUST has named a learning facility at the ground floor of the Lee Shau Kee Library as the “Sze Chi Ching and Wu Shu Min Learning Space.”Dr. Sze and his four sons—Mr. Ivis Sze, Mr. Irons Sze, Mr. Ivan Sze, and Mr. Jaime Sze—were joined at the naming ceremony for the Sze Chi Ching and Wu Shu Min Learning Space on March 30 by HKUST’s senior management, including Prof. Nancy IP, HKUST President; Prof. GUO Yike, Provost; Prof. Charles NG, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement; Prof. Tim CHENG, Vice-President for Research and Development; and Ir John KWONG, Vice-President for Development.

An Afternoon of Insights and Delight with the Chairman of Gree
A staunch commitment to strengthening links with industry, academia, and research, while driving talent development and innovation, was proudly on display at HKUST during a special event titled “Afternoon of Insights” featuring Ms. DONG Mingzhu, Chairman of Gree Electric Appliances, Inc. of Zhuhai.Ms. Dong shared her valuable experiences and perspectives on corporate management and talent development at GREE during the event on March 26 in front of an enthusiastic crowd of over 600 students, alumni, and faculty members, both in person and online. Held as part of HKUST’s 35th anniversary celebrations, the event began with a warm welcome address by Prof. Charles NG, Vice-President for Institutional Advancement at HKUST, who thanked Ms. Dong for visiting the University and engaging with the community.

This March, the immensely talented cast and production team behind this year’s community musical, Carousel, shone a spotlight on HKUST’s dedication to fostering a vibrant arts culture on campus.Presented by the Shaw Auditorium Unit and co-directed by Dr. Isaac DROSCHA, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Humanities, and Ms. Mandy PETTY, a renowned choreographer, the show represents a cultural blend of classic Broadway musical staged at HKUST.

Life-saving Blood Donation Drive Launched with the Hong Kong Red Cross
In a powerful demonstration of community spirit, HKUST is encouraging the campus community to mark our 35th Anniversary by donating blood throughout the celebratory year.The 35th Anniversary blood donation drive reflects HKUST’s longstanding spirit of mutual care and commitment to giving back to society.The blood donation drive kicked off at a ceremony titled “35 for Life: Every Drop Counts, Every Life Matters” on March 5 at the University’s Clear Water Bay campus. The drive responds to the urgent need to maintain adequate blood supplies against falling numbers of donors. Over the past decade, the number of active donors has fallen by 24%, with participation among people aged 16 to 30 dropping sharply, from 45% to 17%.
